Severy says, "Oh well, I'll just leave the 8-line log in there for the time being" dcarson says, "according to cybercash they don't provide or support old versions, so what now?" Scottyg says, "As large as pair and cybercash are, pair must routinely see this problem if they are using 2.2.7. Maybe they can help?" dcarson says, "worth asking, I'll add it to my todo" dcarson says, "pair does have a secure sales site of their own (actually a customer) Americash they recommnet" Severy says, "Yeah, I was just thinking about Americart myself" dcarson says, "Americart I think" Severy says, "They obviuosly support the 2.2.7 servers" Scottyg says, "Another thought.....The MCK includes both PERL and C libraries. Maybe we could just split out the PERL." dcarson says, "I can try, but it comes as a exe nota tar fiel and the instaler won't run without missing libraries" Scottyg says, "Um. I unpacked it on my LINUX system." Scottyg says, "But I didn't look very close at the install. I mostly wanted the docs." dcarson says, "now thats an idea, install it on my linux box and then copt the perl over" Scottyg says, "yep, thats what I was thinking. What PERL version is running on our server?" Severy says, "I think all of the major versions are available" dcarson says, "5.004 it looks like" Scottyg says, "But if its an exe, how can you unpack it Dana?" dcarson says, "and I know how to install extra libraries and modules for perl as a user" dcarson says, "install the linux exe here and then copy the files I need to qs33" Scottyg says, "I don't think the version I got was an exe. I think it was a tar or zip." dcarson says, "install-mck-3.3.1-i386-pc-freebsdelf3.2: ELF 32-bit LSB executable," dcarson says, "maybe they do it differently on linux" dcarson says, "or the doc might be tars, I think they were" Scottyg says, "I'm going to have a look." TimCadell arrives. TimCadell says, "Hey, everyone!" dcarson says, "hi tim" Severy says, "Hi, Tim!" TimCadell says, "Hi, Dana. How's it goin', eh?" TimCadell says, "Hey, Randall!" TimCadell says, "No Greg?" TimCadell says, "Hey, Scotty. How's things with you?" Scottyg says, "Hiya Tim!" Scottyg says, "Life would be good if these d88n computers would behave." TimCadell says, "It'll never happen." Scottyg says, "d**n too. Computer can't even cuss right." TimCadell knows that the programmer's first language is unprintable. TimCadell says, "Hey, anyone here read Scientific American?" Scottyg says, "Dana, the version downloaded looks like an exe too." Scottyg says, "...(I downloaded)..." Scottyg says, "Randall, do you have access to a 3.2Bsd system?" dcarson says, "OK, but I have or can install the right version of linux to make ite work to install the files" Scottyg says, "Will it run the same binaries? I'm amazed!" Severy says, "I have the FreeBSD 3.0 CD, but I haven't installed it anywhere yet" dcarson says, "no but the same perl files should work" Severy says, "I'm planning to install it on my Linux server as another multi-boot OS once I upgrade the server's memory, but I haven't gotten around to that yet" Scottyg says, "But how can you get the PERL without first running the installer to unpack it?" TimCadell says, "Damn, the article I wanted to point out isn't in the online version of Scientific American." dcarson says, "they have linux installers, I'll dl one of those" Scottyg says, "Oh, DUH. The PERL is probably the same. :=)" dcarson says, "one would hope" Scottyg says, "Possibly some different path conventions." dcarson says, "could be, I can deal with that" dcarson says, "what else do we need to do tonight?" TimCadell says, "Actually, we just installed ActiveState Perl's latest version and immediately starting having problems. We went back to an older version and the problems disappeared. I don't know if the modules changed or something about their implementation changed." TimCadell says, "I'd like to suggest everyone read the current issue of Scientific American, the one with a white cover that has articles about the lack of water on the planet." dcarson says, "but thats under windows" TimCadell says, "There's a VERY interesting article on Salesmanship in there that suggests lots of things we should be doing:" Scottyg says, "I *might* have access to a BSD3.2 platform. My ISP is using BSD, but I don't know what version. Since they are also my company's ISP, I have some leverage." dcarson says, "OK will look at it when I hit the library or bookstore" TimCadell says, "1) If you send someone a gift with a request for membership, they're MUCH more likely to subscribe." TimCadell says, "2) If you offer them something hard to accept, but then a fall-back position, they're much more likely to take the fall-back than if that were the first thing you offered. Something like twice as likely." TimCadell says, "So, if we promoted an expensive Lifetime Membership, but then "If you can't afford that, how about our yearly membership?", theoretically they're much more likely." TimCadell steps off his soapbox. TimCadell says, "Dana, yup, it was on Windows, but different versions can be problematic whatever the OS." TimCadell says, "All in all, I'm very happy with Perl's portability." Scottyg says, "I agree with both points, but as Treasurer I have to point out that we only have net income of two or three dollars per member. That won't buy many gifts." dcarson says, "I just read a recomendation of a book called *Why We Buy* by Underhill on what makes people buy" TimCadell says, "True. I was thinking posters, since we have a plethora of them." TimCadell says, "Even a small gift should work. Maybe a keychain or bumper sticker?" Scottyg says, "Bumper stickers are in our class. :=)" Scottyg says, "But posters at $3 or 4 plus S&H are not." dcarson says, "and if they use it and don't join its still helpful" TimCadell says, "Could be." TimCadell says, "True as well, Dana." TimCadell says, "Anyway, check it out. It also will help on promotional writing." Scottyg says, "Well, anyone else have anything for the meeting? I'm trying to rebuild a computer that needs my attention." TimCadell says, "Nope. I'll see you all later, guys!" dcarson says, "not here" TimCadell has disconnected. Scottyg says, "Well, I guess I'll go beat on this machine some more. I've been fighting problems on it for over a week." dcarson says, "use a bigger club" Scottyg says, "Much bigger and it will die." Scottyg says, "See ya later." dcarson says, "then you have to get a new one and the problem is solved" Scottyg says, "Well,sorta......" Scottyg has disconnected. The housekeeper arrives to cart TimCadell off to bed. The housekeeper arrives to cart Scottyg off to bed. In a blinding flash of light, Severy vanishes into thin air dcarson has disconnected.
