-- Start log: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 9:08:42 pm ASI Meeting Server time-- saavik says, "especially as he played phantom of the opera" Severy laughs. saavik says, "ok, will do randall." saavik says, "my parents were here - they loved it :-)" Severy says, "John, it will become a mess if the agenda is a free-for-all, next time just send me a request for agenda additions" kokhmmm has arrived. john-r says, "I will Randall" Michael reads the meeting agenda Severy says, "I need to be able to decide what the priorities should be for the agenda items" john-r says, "I will ask you that is" kokhmmm reads the meeting agenda Arthur says, "Hi Peter!" john-r says, "Hi Peter- Have a good trip?" kokhmmm says, "Hi everyone" Severy says, "And you have to be careful of the agenda format or it won't show up right in here" Severy says, "Hi, Peter!" kokhmmm says, "Yes, good trip. Two weeks ago, could only connect until 7pm when office closed at campsite, that's why I wasn't there" Severy says, "Sorry we couldn't hook up when you came through, that weekend was a bit too crazy" kokhmmm says, "Randall, didn't have any time to myself. But walked all around the tidal basin - billions and billions of cherry blossoms" Michael says, "woah.... what happened to command-post!" Arthur says, "command-post? Amy said something about that too - what's that?" Michael says, "war blog.... one of the best...." saavik says, "yeah, it changed a LOT tonight" Severy says, "Yup, command post changed their format, a lot of regulars are griping about it already" Severy says, "Yup, I was on a bike trip around the tidal basin last weekend, it was quite impressive" saavik wants to come to the cheery blossoms one of these years Michael says, "good idea...." Michael says, "doh!" saavik says, "doh?" saavik says, "and when do we start the meeting?" Michael says, "Arthur and I were whispering to each other and I messed up....." Arthur says, "in case you thought Michael was talking to himself :-)" Arthur says, "Well, John's got the first agenda item by editing it in deliberately - if Randall's ok, maybe we should start with that (I'd like to hear what's up anyway)" Michael says, "and in case you're curious, yes! we were talking about you! ;-)" Arthur says, "just discussing Michael's planned rocketforge article..." Severy says, "Yup, let's get this show on the road" Severy says, "John, you're up first!" john-r says, "Am i on the speaking box?" john-r says, "ok" john-r says, "First , we went line sunday a week ago, and i am now on the 4th changing image,..." john-r says, "line=live" dcarson says, "note to self, setup cron job to rebublish the allnews page hourly so it isn't a week out of date" Arthur says, "Ooh, very nice - I've seen the other three, hadn't noticed the latest yet" saavik says, "the new page is great john" saavik says, "you did great work" john-r says, "and i have the colors of most of the existing side bars changed from black to blue (i need to talk later with Scotty on one in MMM)...." kokhmmm says, "John, could it be possible to click on the image and get the original size?" john-r says, "and one that i came across today is stored in TLRC site, and thats the reason for the question in the agenda" john-r says, "Peter - in time yes :)" john-r says, "and also- most of the images are at a larger size when you go to the link in the bottom line of the image area" kokhmmm says, "I DO like the page, the result of a lot of hard work!" john-r says, "TY Peter" john-r says, "From all on the web-team and leaders" john-r says, "And Greg is not here yet, so we may have to move on, in reference to TLRC" Arthur says, "Yes, good work john, good leadership :-)" dcarson says, "looks good John, thanks" Strangelv teleports handheld in. john-r NOTES LEADERSHIP GOT CARRIED AWAY ON THE AGENDA CHANGE THO john-r says, "AND HIT CAPS LOT" john-r says, "unintended" john-r says, "So any comments on using images from TLRC ?" Michael says, "just gotta get the ok.... beyond that I don't see a problem" john-r says, "Do we need an e-mail ok from TLRC?" Michael says, "sounds sufficient...." john-r says, "ok, 2nd item is showing the Mars page - it kinda ties in with my first copy of MMM from march 2003, where Peter is talking about MArs sails and brings up the Moon" john-r says, "do i need to copy the link to here??" john-r says, "and..." dcarson says, "wouldn't hurt" john-r says, "it ties in, i think with the current space settlement group" john-r says, "see http://www.asi.org/adb/02/05/01/" Arthur says, "I have no problem with a Mars picture" Severy says, "Ok, Spam mailbox has been cleaned out, 10 non-spam messages have been moved to other mailboxes" john-r says, "Mars , from reading the Databook is on the list for a reason to have a Moon Base" dcarson says, "same here, we might want to update that page, it talks about the number of articles in tha ADB as of 99" dcarson says, "and check if the links still work" john-r says, "Some of the web ring links do seem outdated or not working" john-r says, "Does the board need to vote?" Michael doesn't see a need.... kokhmmm says, "John, if you think it appropriate, I could send you set of links to MMM Mars articles from issues past that are online." Arthur says, "invite some Mars people to join up and fix up our pages? :-)" dcarson says, "we've go to stop having the board deal with thinga at this level if we're going to get volunteers to get things done" john-r says, "Peter- for now maybe links to moon articals and lets see how the databook image goes - if any members / non members have any issues- if thats ok?" john-r says, "Good Point Arthur" Michael says, "yep.... that's what Executive Directors do.... Board's say things like "make a web page" and Executive Directors make sure they work and look good...." john-r says, "Good point too Dana" Arthur says, "hmmm, if we had an executive director :-)" saavik reads the meeting agenda john-r says, "So on item 2 i am good to go, and will update the mars page before it goes on changing image" Arthur says, "Now, a question from me. We haven't mentioned the changes to artemis-list yet, have we?" john-r says, "No, and no one there has asked any questions" kokhmmm says, "I will do a writeup on the website changes in May MMM" Arthur says, "I think we should announce, and along with the changing image, invite people to nominate their favorite images from the ADB for the front page. Or to supply some new ones :-)" Severy says, "Sounds like a good idea, Arthur" john-r says, "i agree" kokhmmm says, "Me too" saavik says, "third" dcarson says, "ditto" Arthur says, "Uh-oh, such agreement is very worrying :-0)" john-r says, "LOL" Severy grins. john-r says, "LAst for me is Scotty are you around?" Arthur says, "John, could you write up an announcement and run it by the web-team/leaders and then we'll post?" john-r says, "Will do Arthur" Arthur says, "we may not get many nominations - I guess see how that goes a while and we might want to tweak it a bit" ------------------------------ | | john-r holds up a BIG sign: | Yo - Scotty you here :) | |_________________________| john-r says, "see http://www.moonsociety.org/members/mmm/" john-r says, "its a page that needs the color changed, and i need access to the private MMM directory" Scottyg-1 says, "I'm here, but lagging badly at times." john-r says, "Did you get my request to join the mmmm team?" Greg-1 arrives amidst thundering applause. Scottyg-1 says, "Ah fooey. Forgot to join you up." john-r says, "Hi Greg" Greg-1 says, "Good evening. My apologies for my tardiness." john-r says, ":) to Scotty " Scottyg-1 says, "But john, Randall is planning to incorporate the MMM area into our main WSD" Scottyg-1 says, "Then we'll be able to use templates on it." kokhmmm says, "John, on the My Moon Page, the space science news is a different feed, no?" john-r asks for next meeting web-team agenda iteam to be added - discussion on using non member input on the changing image john-r says, "I had not heard that Scotty" john-r says, "Dana - did you see Peters coment on my moon news feed?" dcarson says, "its the same feeds, but I need to fix the formatting" Arthur says, "anything more on the web site?" john-r says, "Dana - is that something that can be done in the next few days?" john-r says, "only to ck with Peter and Patrick Vitarius" john-r says, "Huntsville, Alabama Outpostman" john-r says, "Peter have you seen his request?" john-r says, "Then i am done with web-team for tonight" dcarson says, "sure, I'll try to get it done tonight" kokhmmm says, "Request for web space? Yes. Okay with me. He has had a meeting and has 7 recruits which he expects to join soon." john-r says, "Mike Delaney is aware also, i just wanted to be sure you had time to catch up on e-mail :)" john-r says, "7 new ones, sounds good" saavik reads the meeting agenda john-r says, "Ok, i am done :)" Severy says, "John, what do you mean by non-member input on the changing image?" john-r says, "If a non member submits a image, the issues of ownership, and verifiying and our non profit status" john-r says, "and thse kind of things" john-r says, "those" Severy says, "I thought we had a policy written up somewhere about the ownership issues of stuff submitted to the web site" john-r says, "And will some of them maybe try to take people away to other sites- as in a busness trying to pull a fast one" Severy says, "But yeah, we can talk about that at the next meeting" Greg-1 says, "Click the copyright button at the buttom of any ASI page." john-r says, "I think there is for the ASI site, but not sure on Moonsociety site" Greg-1 says, "bottom, too" Severy says, "Can you send me an e-mail with that agenda request, John? I'm not going to remember it after the meeting..." john-r says, "But the images are showing on the moonsociety site Greg" Arthur says, "Well, next meeting" john-r says, "Whyyyyy - Ok i will e-mail :)" Severy says, "I'm not at home, so I don't have an easy way to keep track of stuff at the moment..." john-r says, "Its a long drawn out discussion, and we (me) need time to sort it all out" Severy says, "Ok, moving on to the next agenda iteam" Severy says, "item, too" john-r was being a pest to Randall john-r says, "yes next item" Severy says, "I had hoped to have the call for volunteers e-mail ready by tonight, but it was not meant to be" john-r says, "and i did not have time to write one to the chapters leqader list" Severy says, "I had some questions, however, about volunteers needed in the membership processing area" john-r says, "leaders to" Severy says, "Peter, I believe you volunteered to take a look at the membership processing challenges, right?" kokhmmm says, "Could be. I have been overwhelmed with action items, and have not taken a look at it yet. Sorry." Greg-1 says, "On behalf of the contributors to Artemis Society International, I hereby give permission to the Moon Society to publish copyrighted images from the ASI web on the Moon Society web. -- Gregory R. Bennett, President, Artemis Society International." Arthur says, "is this on the issue of renewals?" Greg-1 says, "... problem solved." kokhmmm says, "On membership, all I have done is to send form letters to soon to expire hardopy subscribers." Severy says, "Yes, Arthur" john-r says, "TY Greg" Severy says, "I think finding a replacement for Jennifer is the biggest priority at the moment" Arthur says, "Ah, right." Arthur says, "Scotty automated some of that work - was it just the credit-card processing?" Severy says, "Sending out renewal reminders is the biggest challenge at the moment" Scottyg-1 says, "Thats the only work done recently Arthur." Scottyg-1 says, "Emails are easy - they can be done by a script." Arthur says, "Is there any way we can contract out the hardcopy stuff to a business that does this professionally?" Scottyg-1 says, "But snail mail is tedious and is where its hard to find someone to do it." Severy says, "That was one of the open questions that we needed someone to research, Arthur" Arthur says, "Right, it's coming back now :-)" Severy says, "Peter, should I include membership processing in the call for volunteers list?" kokhmmm says, "300 people is an average of 25 a month. I can do that. I just need to be fed names and addresses." Severy says, "But if we grow our membership as we hope, Peter, it will be a challenge keeping up with it" Severy says, "I suggest we try to find a way to do it that can scale as we grow" kokhmmm says, "Randall, you can, but I could fill the gap. send names, addresses, and a form letter. Yes, as we grow, it will become more of a job." Scottyg-1 says, "But Peter, we send notices at -60, -30, 0, +30, and +60 days relative to expiration date." Scottyg-1 says, "And I think it probably averages two to three letters per member." Arthur says, "Hardcopy notices? That's rather a lot..." kokhmmm says, "Yes, that's too much for me. I'd be up to sending only one." Scottyg-1 says, "so I think you're talking something like 50 to 75 letters." Severy says, "It's the same amount I get from other orgs, Arthur" Severy says, "I've been late on renewing my NSS membership this year, I think I've received at least five letters so far" kokhmmm says, "I currently send one letter to each hardcopy subscriber about to expire. That's an average of 12 a month. I couldn't do much more than twice that." saavik says, "test" Severy says, "Can anyone here look into what would be involved in outsourcing that function?" saavik says, "Sure. I wasn't actually taking minutes tonight but I will now ;-)" john-r says, "TY Amy" Severy has reconnected. Severy says, "So *that's* what that button does :-)" Arthur says, "Hmmm, here's a site via google: http://www.membership-organization-marketing.com/" Michael says, "hehehe" john-r says, "LOL" Scottyg-1 says, "LOL" kokhmmm says, "Randall, this is a far out suggestion perhaps. Renewal letters could be a chapter project. But only St. Louis is big enough, and might not be willing." Michael likes that URL.... there has to be a stateside version.... Arthur says, "Yeah, looks UK'ish, doesn't it." john-r says, "Randall and other's in other space groups, any idea how Mars or NSS does it, renew lwtters ect" Michael says, "same way we do.... by hand...." Scottyg-1 says, "BTW, membership has increased from about 240 in January to 340 today." kokhmmm says, "NSS had paid staff, John" Severy says, "Wow!" john-r says, "so why not do a busness plan to do the reneweal letters , from members?" Severy says, "Maybe some of our incentive stuff is working!" kokhmmm says, "Scotty, that's great news! !! !!!" Arthur says, "Woohoo!!!" john-r says, "wow big time on 100 growth" dcarson says, "should we ask on the mailing list, always possible that a member works for, has a realtive etc who works for such a company" Scottyg-1 says, "Gee..why am I the only one who knows what membership is doing?" Severy says, "You're the only one who's taken the time to look, Scotty :-)" john-r says, "maybe because some should do 1 20 page report every 2 days :)" Scottyg-1 says, "Don't all of you have access to Team Director reports?" Arthur says, "Ian tells everyone we have "thousands" of members :-)" dcarson says, "we've been having fun playing with thye web site while you do the boring stuff :-)" john-r says, "Arthur i think Ian refers to all involved- " john-r says, "as in the sponsers and prog partarcipts" Arthur says, "which team director reports? I just look at the entire "current members" list once in a while" Scottyg-1 says, "Well, we have 1229 members...." Scottyg-1 says, "But only 340 current members." kokhmmm says, "No, John, he includes non-paid members, er,fellow travelers" Arthur says, "Scotty, do you have a particular URL where some of this is reported in a friendlier format?" kokhmmm says, "Could we offer rewards for processing renewal letters? Like a free renewal?" Arthur says, "Ooh, reports, I never noticed that button..." Scottyg-1 says, "Arthur, does your Team Director screen have radio buttons for Administrator and Member just above the Team list?" john-r says, "Dana - has a good point if we are cking into paid outsourcing of renewal letters" Arthur says, "Yes, Dana, good idea. Maybe that would work as part of Randall's call for volunteers, to ask for somebody to do the research (not to actually do the work?)" Severy says, "Peter, I think we need to be careful about getting volunteers to handle membership renewals, we need more accountability for that function I think than we are likely to get from most volunteers" Severy says, "Yup, I can add a "Membership Processing Improvements Coordinator" role to the call for volunteers" dcarson says, "it does fall into the job a volunterr can do in a reasonable time without much or any budget" Michael says, "did you know there's an International Association of Association Management Companies?" dcarson says, "and if we tell them they can't make any deals for us they don't really need uspervision" Michael says, "www.iaamc.org" dcarson says, "wonder who organizes their meetings :-)" Arthur says, "Our organization belongs to a couple of meta-organizations like that - although not one quite so generic :-)" Arthur says, "where I work I mean" Arthur says, "(we have paid staff who do all our membership processing...)" Severy says, "Oops, I lost my DNS access, this time I need to disconnect by choice" Severy will be right back. Severy has disconnected. Arthur says, "lost DNS?" dcarson says, "Arthur, if you slipped a list of addresses and a new form letter in the inbox do you think they'd notice :-)" Severy has connected. dcarson says, "domain name service, what turns hostnames into the real address" Severy says, "Ok, much better" Arthur says, "unfortunately that group is in our HQ office in the DC area... and i don't know much about how they do things down there..." Arthur says, "Hmmm, Randall, what else do you have on the "call for volunteers" list so far?" Arthur says, "Maybe fleshing out this "membership processing improvements coordinator" position can give us some other good ideas?" Michael thinks providing association management functions to all the space groups could be enough of a money making venture to provide at least one person a decent regular income. Michael says, " http://www.iaamc.org/membership/memberlist.asp <-- a big list of people who we could outsource our membership fulfillment crap to...." Severy says, "Unfortunately, I don't have the list with me, Arthur, it's out in the car" Arthur says, "circulate it on the leaders list again just to see if we have any more bright ideas, before sending it out?" Severy says, "Yup, I plan to" john-r says, "I like Michael thoughts" Severy says, "The office list of needed volunteers will be a web page, so it will be a living document, something that we can keep pointing people to when they ask "so what can *I* do?"" kokhmmm says, "How about looking at the tasks undertaken by paid NSS staff? That would give us a good idea of where we need volunteers to be effective." saavik says, "I've about had it for the night... any other urgent items for the secretary?" Severy says, "office=> official" saavik says, "I also have to get up early" john-r says, "Nite Amy" Severy says, "I haven't made any progress on the electronic MMM stuff, but I will soon, I promise :-)" Severy says, "Michael, any updates on the grant stuff?" saavik says, "ok, night all" saavik has disconnected. MikeD follows john-r into the room Michael says, "nope.... still haven't heard from Paul's VaTech contact...." MikeD says, "Evening, sorry I'm late" Severy says, "Hi, Mike!" Arthur says, "You just missed Amy" MikeD says, "That figures" Michael says, "guys, I have to run as well... rehab starts at 7:45 so have to get some sleep...." Severy says, "Ouch! Good luck, Michael!" Arthur says, "Yeah, I need to finish up soon too. Anything else critical right now? " Michael says, "g'nite!" Michael goes home. kokhmmm says, "Good night, Michael" MikeD has reconnected. Severy says, "I think we've covered the critical stuff for tonight" MikeD reads the meeting agenda john-r has 30 min more john-r says, "Hi MikeD" Severy says, "We were actually just about to get to your agenda item, Mike" MikeD says, "Howyoudoin John" Severy says, "Any updates on team stuff?" john-r says, "Fine MikeD" MikeD says, "Not much, just waiting to install Patrick from Huntsville" MikeD says, "Other stuff is on the back burner until I can get more time online" Severy says, "Interesting news: "Britain's pioneering Beagle 2 mission to find life on Mars could be hampered because of a "big traffic jam" around the Red Planet, the head of the mission admitted yesterday."" Severy says, "That's a *good* problem to have :-)" The housekeeper arrives to cart saavik off to bed. MikeD says, "Nah, the problem is caused by too many people in the house looking for jobs" john-r says, "Scotty - i got the mmm index page updated for blue left side bar and nooo flag contest - TY for the join :)" Arthur says, "overloading the deep space network, I think is the problem" john-r reads the meeting agenda MikeD says, "May the soul of the flag contest rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon it" john-r says, "i truley hope so :) MikeD" kokhmmm says, "John & Scotty, I think the MMM page (pdf archives) should have a link to http://www.asi.org/adb/06/09/03/02/ which is the online article archives" john-r says, "Peter for quick adds i chage 100 bucks a word, do i have your approval :)" kokhmmm says, "Yes" john-r ) if only i could collect john-r says, ":)" kokhmmm says, "I'll remember you when I win the powerball, John" john-r says, "can i fin a e-mail to randall on agenda add first ?" john-r says, "Sounds Good Peter :)" MikeD says, "Peter, do you know if Patrick has his Team Director account yet?" kokhmmm says, "John, and vice versa. The MMM online archives on page cited should have a link to the MMM PDF archive page." kokhmmm says, "Mike, no I do not know that. I will email him. He had a meeting and 8 people showed up, has hopes they will sign up soon." MikeD says, "Well, I sent him an email saying he needs to go to http://www.moonsociety.org/teamdir but I just checked, he doesn't have a Team Dir acct yet" MikeD says, "I'm stuck in limbo until he has one" Arthur says, "Ok, goodnight guys - I really do have to go now..." Arthur has disconnected. john-r says, "Nite Arthur" john-r says, "missed him" kokhmmm says, "Mike, I just emailed Patrick and CCd to you." kokhmmm says, "good night Arthur!" MikeD says, "Thanks Peter" MikeD says, "John, what's the work scene like for you now? Busy?" john-r says, "How so MikeD- pay work or here?" MikeD says, "Pay work" MikeD says, "It's still slow here, too much rain" MikeD says, "All the construction guys are getting tired waiting for sunshine" john-r says, "My work has had 14 hr days, then no work" MikeD says, "No work for how long?" The housekeeper arrives to cart Arthur off to bed. john-r says, "generally good till this week" MikeD says, "It's really slow in northern california, I'm hoping things improve soon" kokhmmm says, "Mike, I gather you are back stateside. New email address?" john-r says, "Mike Turner - theres a name from my past- a former brother in law" MikeD says, "Anyway, as a result of two people being unemployed in this house right now, I can't get online much inthe daytime and evenings are always a challenge" john-r says, "in the commoms" MikeD says, "Same email will work peter, or you can always just send to mdelaney@asi.org or mdelaney@moonsociety.org" MikeD says, "I've been back since Feb 25" MikeD says, "But I'm staying with friends, that's why I can't spend much time online" MikeD says, "Anyway, someone else needs to use the phone so I have to go" MikeD has disconnected. Scottyg-1 says, "Time for me to go too. G'nite!" Severy says, "Good night!" Severy says, "I think this meeting is over for the night :-)" -- End log: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 11:01:54 pm ASI Meeting Server time--
