-- Start log: Wednesday, August 1, 2012 9:04:14 pm ASI Meeting Server time-- Scottyg says, "We need a poster to go with the solar power demo. Lots of people didn't know what they were looking at. Just about all were interested when it was explained." Lunadyne says, "Welcome everyone to the Aug 1 Leadership Meeting. Roll Call!" Lunadyne says, "Here" dcarson says, "here" bnault says, "here" pjbanyai says, "here" Scottyg says, "But some walked by without a chance to explain." Scottyg says, "here." Lunadyne says, "I've been trying to talk NSS of NT into putting together an SSP display..." Chard-1 says, "here" Lunadyne says, "First up on the agenda is membership. I just checked and it's showing as 155." Lunadyne says, "I had previously forwarded the info for the free ISDC memberships. Should I resend that?" Scottyg says, "No, I have it. Just haven't gotten around 2 it." Lunadyne says, "I heard from Paul Graham of OpenLuna right before the SFF conference." Lunadyne says, "He was a bit underwhelmed by the "nifty new member packet"" Lunadyne says, "We should probably look into updating that a bit." Lunadyne says, "Any suggestions?" Scottyg says, "I'm not even sure I know what's in it." Lunadyne says, "I think one of those old LPI Moon Maps. Maybe an Artemis Society poster." bnault says, "I am not sure other organizations even have new member packets...except for a solicitation for $$" Lunadyne says, "You must be thinking of NSS..." pjbanyai says, "I finally gained access to helpdir messages the other day. I have tallied up the digital ballots. We had 3 possible problem ballots. One member started teir membership in June and another may have not been a continuous member through the month of May(they renewed in June). We also have one member who either changed their vote at the last minute or another member of their family who used to be a member(expired several years) sent in their ballot. The newest email from that address had the name of the current member but the member ID of the other family member." bnault says, "amongst others" lesausl has arrived. Lunadyne says, "Hi Bryce" pjbanyai says, "Hi Bryce" lesausl says, "Hi everyone." Scottyg says, "I have three mail-ins. Tell me where you want them sent and I'll scan and send them." Lunadyne says, "Since we're jumping forward in the Agenda, let's move to the elections." Lunadyne says, "Paul, I would say in the first instance disallow, in the second case ignore the lapse since they renewed." Lunadyne says, "In the third, use the most recent ballot." Lunadyne says, "So with three paper ballots, how many electronic do we have?" pjbanyai says, "I would send it to the elections address if I knew it could handle scans:) Otherwise vice-president@moonsociety.org or maybe pjbanyai@gmail.com for the same reason:)" Lunadyne says, "I'd go with the Gmail address to ensure attachment delivery." Scottyg says, "I think that's the best choice." pjbanyai says, "20 " dcarson says, "over 10%, thats a big turnout for a group like this" pjbanyai says, "with mail-in 23" Lunadyne says, "Let's see, 23/153= 15%, which is pretty good." pjbanyai says, "assuming the mail-ins are valid" Scottyg says, "I'm fairy sure they are. David Schrunk, John Hadden & Bryce Johnson." Lunadyne says, "Okay, while Paul is compiling those, let's jump back to the Agenda. Treasurer's Report." Strangelv-1 forgot to send his in, but suspects it isn't important. He wonders if he's teh only one who's unabel to renew online dcarson says, "I remember the ACM years ago doing a major vote drive to get 1% so they could change the bylaws to not require 1% to change the bylaws" Strangelv-1 says, "yike" Strangelv-1 says, "That's a pretty seriously apathetic membership" Lunadyne says, "Lots of resume burnishing." dcarson says, "still entering data, with grandkids I'm not getting much done " dcarson says, "you were a mmeber to get the journals" Lunadyne says, "well at least we've got the filings all caught up, which is a big start." dcarson says, "yep" Chard-1 says, "good deal" Strangelv-1 says, "SO we've successfulyl saved out 501(c)(3) statups?" Lunadyne says, "Once the books are caught up I do still want the 2011 numbers audited. Being able to show an audited set of financials is huge." Lunadyne says, "James, it looks like, although it's really more 'better secured' than 'saved'." Strangelv-1 discovers another off-topic item to note dcarson says, "was already safe, you have to miss 3 years to have it taken away" Strangelv-1: www.moonsociety.org uses an invalid security certificate. Strangelv-1: The certificate expired on 07/25/2012 04:28 AM. The current time is 08/01/2012 08:22 PM. Strangelv-1: (Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate) Strangelv-1 says, "I was under the impression we were days away from reaching year 3" dcarson says, "but we now have a solid filing for the last 3 years since they required it" pjbanyai says, "I have not received email of mail-ins yet. Also James' membership recently expired." Lunadyne says, "Isn't our server folks responsible for the security certificate?" Scottyg says, "No, we are." dcarson says, "I have a new one but it seems to be a copy of the old one, I have a email to the vendor support" bnault says, "we have to pay for it, the server folks have to install it...." dcarson says, "no you buy the cert seperatly" Lunadyne says, "Paul, did James' vote come in before his membership lapse?" Strangelv-1 is trying to fix his membership. He didn't know until he saw the email saying he was dumped from the NEA list that it had expired, and his attempt to renew kept dumping him back to page 1 Strangelv-1 didn't manage to cast a vote this year Strangelv-1 has been distracted Lunadyne says, "So how do we take care of the Certificate?" dcarson says, "either they sent the wrong one or I misread instructions and downloaded the old one which was the only one I saw" dcarson says, "will go over the help tonight and see if that clears it up" Lunadyne says, "Okay." Scottyg says, "How do you know it was the same? File compare?" dcarson says, "it has the date in it" Scottyg says, "But isn't that encrypted?" dcarson says, "installed it and Ranall restarted the server and it still expired the dame date" Lunadyne says, "Oh, while we're still on Treasury, can I get an account balance for the State of the Society report?" dcarson says, "Scotty, you have the latest statement I think" Scottyg says, "Ok, but if any error was made installing it the server may still be seeing the old one." Scottyg says, "I'll have to go fetch it." dcarson says, "Randall double checked my install, will reread the help that support sent " Strangelv-1 says, "Unlike last try I appear to have successfulyl renewed this time" pjbanyai says, "The server is still having a problem with php. Our blog is still down." Scottyg says, "The Linux/Apache folks keep changing the server setup and I've sometimes ended up putting stuff in the wrong place." Lunadyne says, "I just checked and I'm pleased to say that our membership stands at 156!" bnault says, "are we talking about the website now...It was at the bottom of the agenda..." pjbanyai says, "still no mail-in vote scan. We were mostly talking about membership problems." Strangelv-1 reads the meeting agenda Lunadyne says, "It seems to have wandered that way as internet issues are a perpetual thorn in our paw." Lunadyne says, "I think we're done with Treasury, but I don't recall seeing Peter sneak in." Lunadyne says, "And Paul's waiting on the scans of the paper ballots, so let's move on to the State of the Society." Scottyg says, "The last bank statement I have was for June 29. Balance was $30,481.09." Lunadyne says, "Do we have any of that in CDs?" Scottyg says, "No - it's all in a checking account." Lunadyne says, "I sent around a "State of the Society in response to Paul's recent "Reminder" e-mail." Lunadyne says, "Not that it would actually earn anything in a CD..." Lunadyne says, "In case folks don't remember, I'll go through it here." Scottyg says, "Not unless the term is probably longer than we want to commit to." Lunadyne says, "Part the First: Membership: As of 08/01/12, Moon Society membership stood at 156 members, up from 144 a year ago, an 8.3% increase. This does not include the complimentary memberships given to out to the speakers in our Cislunar Econosphere track at ISDC." Lunadyne says, "Part II: Treasury: The Moon Society has funds available in the amount of $30,000, approximately flat from a year ago." Lunadyne says, "Part 3: Publications: The Moon Miners' Manifesto continues its multi-decade run as a venue for articles on the development of our Moon. Peter Kokh has been principal in this effort, and is looking for an editorial team to train." Strangelv-1 would argue for putting a portion of long-term savings into precious metals Lunadyne says, "Article IV: Outreach Materials: In the last year we produced the Moon Society lapel pins for use by our members. These allow us to find each other at conferences and other events, and let other people know that you're working towards our Lunar future. Two major outreach materials are slated for production this year - membership brochures and postcards. We need members with an interest in design and layout to help with these." Lunadyne says, "Ken is intrigued by James' suggestion. Do you have a newsletter? lol" Lunadyne says, "Off the cuff, I would suggest putting $10000 in gold. Given its liquidity more could be considered." Strangelv-1 wouldf suggest at least a portion of taht in silver dcarson says, "if you get an error message emil it to me and I'll pass it on the Randall if I can't fix itI'd consider tht a high risk investment for the kind of funds we have" Lunadyne says, "Para. 6: Website: Our website has been experiencing a variety of arcane, computer-related issues that have constrained our ability to keep the website updated, as well as to update it for modern platforms. Despite calls for members with internet skills to step up, there has been a consistent dearth of responses to these calls, leaving The Moon Society understaffed in regards to the needs of our web assets." Strangelv-1 says, "silver is more volatile and you should check prices before selling if possible, but it has a lot more upside potential than gold" Strangelv-1 says, "Right now is about as good a time to buy as we're likely to see again" Lunadyne says, "I'm not looking at speculating in upside potential. I'm considering it in terms of wealth preservation." Strangelv-1 says, "Yes" Strangelv-1 says, "The upside would simply be a target of opportunity" Strangelv-1 says, "If various currencies crash and burn or at least seriously inflate, I expect to see a better result with silver once various factors cease to function" Lunadyne says, "Part the Seventh: Other Web Assets: Our Facebook page continues to be one of our most popular portals, with new Likes up over 18% in the last year. On Facebook, we're on track to becoming one of the most popular of the space advocacy organizations. The main focus there is on informative posts on Lunar and relevant topics." Chard-1 says, "im starting a hedge fund you could invest in" Strangelv-1 says, "Possibly precipidated by one or more exchenges defaulting on futures contracts" Lunadyne says, "VIII: ISDC Track: In 2012, The Moon Society had its first formal ISDC track since 2007. Themed on The Cislunar Econosphere, it presented speakers on a variety of topics relevant to the commercialization of cislunar space and the Moon. This will continue at next year's ISDC with a track on Lunar Lava Tubes." Strangelv-1 ne.eds to look at the facebook page more often Strangelv-1 cheers loudly. Lunadyne says, "Section Nine: Science Projects: We have two projects for which a portion of our Treasury has been allocated:" Lunadyne says, "Title Nine: Science Projects: We have two projects for which a portion of our Treasury has been allocated:" Lunadyne says, "Solar Sail Communication Satellites - this project is to look at the feasibility of using a network of small satellites for Lunar communication. Solar sails are envisioned for station-keeping requirements, but also offer unusual options like pole-sitting. This project is looking for a team leader and a team." Lunadyne says, "Robotic Exploration of Lunar Lava tubes - satellites can look through the skylights of Lunar lava tubes, but deeper exploration is required, and robots offer a nearer-term opportunity to get some results. This project is looking for a team leader and a team." Lunadyne says, "Section 10: Moon Society India: The Moon Society continues to work toward the development of a formal Moon Society in India. To this end, MMM-India Quarterly continues to be published, and avenues for establishment of a formal legal structure continue to be explored." lesausl says, "RE the soalr sail team leader. . . would that HAVE to be a long-term member? Coulkd it be a newbie if thgey were particulkarly qualified to discuss solar sail issues?" Lunadyne says, "So that's what I'm going to send to the membership in anticipation of next week's annual meeting in the MOO." Strangelv-1 can find not nits at this time pjbanyai says, "Reminder Guidestar needs to know our projects and how much they cost us." pjbanyai [Still waiting on emails] Lunadyne says, "Bryce, absolutely. Philip Crume is interested in the Lunar Lava Tubes project, and also Moon Day." Lunadyne says, "Scotty, can you send the scans of the paper ballots to Paul again?" lesausl says, "Ok. I have to check ity out. More about that later. . . " Lunadyne says, "I would note on the Facebook stuff, we're adding new Likes at the rate of 1-2 per day." Lunadyne says, "NSS has 4,443 Likes, so we're closing in fast." lesausl says, "'Likes' or new Facebook Group members? vWe are gettin g those at about 2-3 poer week also." dcarson says, "we need to make sure we post something every day or so, you can see a drop if we go longer then that without a post" Lunadyne says, "Likes. The 3,692 # on the front page." lesausl says, "Ok." Lunadyne says, "By the same token, I don't want to post pointless stuff just to post something. Part of what people like about us (I hope) is the quality of our content." dcarson says, "yeah, but it isn't that hard to find something relavent" Lunadyne says, "Any other comments on the State of the Society?" dcarson says, "if you see something interesting bookmark and post on a slow day" dcarson says, "looks good to me" Lunadyne says, "Dana, I was thinking along those lines. I could post a series of retro images and vastly increase our audience." pjbanyai says, "The President's Annual Report on the State of the Society must be posted before the Annual Meeting takes place." Lunadyne says, "Okay, since Peter isn't here let's move on to Web Assets, since that's what it keeps circling around to." Lunadyne says, "Paul, where do I need to post that?" Lunadyne says, "i.e. where do I upload it?" Strangelv-1 visualises a courthouse bulletin board, but that's hopefulyl not the answer. That's where notices of county political conventions and primaries go Lunadyne says, "I have proposed to Peter that we put a "Help Wanted" bulletin board in the next MMM with the various project openings." pjbanyai says, ""The Secretary shall provide notice and an agenda for the annual meeting at least 30 days in advance of the meeting by posting same in a prominent location on the Society's web site. It is a little late:)" Lunadyne says, "Oops." dcarson says, "we should also think if we have any projects that Kickstarter might be a good fit" Lunadyne says, "well, Peter has been having issues updating, and is looking for someone else to take on that function." pjbanyai says, "The report is usually mentioned near the top of the notice. http://www.moonsociety.org/reports/4th_annual_meeting.html" dcarson says, "I've posted a couple Kickstarter links on the Moon Society facebook page" Lunadyne says, "I think the Lunar Lava Tube would see a strong response. That should be a top priority for any team we put together." pjbanyai says, "I thought the update I made to his preferences to the browser-based view instead of java-based view would have fixed that." dcarson says, "a good kickstarter project has levels of rewards and stretch goals, it doesn't seem to work well as just a fundraiser with no rewards" Strangelv-1 says, "Probably teh best referenec would teh the Order of the Stick Kickstarter" Strangelv-1 says, "It had updated charts showing money raised when, what the next goals were, which lines were stable and which were subject to adjiustment, and near-daily updates" dcarson says, "just found this one which I'll post on Facebook http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/702896616/rre-remote-rover-experiment?ref=search" Lunadyne says, "Again, something best handled by a team. Maybe give away the robotic hardware at the end to top sponsors." Chard-1 says, "my phone is about to go dead.. goyy gotta find a charger" pjbanyai says, "Scotty could you try sending the email to my earthlink account pjbanyai@earthlink.net. Gmail seems to be running slow. I just got Bryce's post to the leaders mailing list from almost an hour ago." Lunadyne says, "That I usually attribute to our server." Lunadyne says, "Haven'" Lunadyne says, "haven't heard from Scotty in a while, he may be scanning." Lunadyne says, "Now that I think about it, I do think the Kickstarter is doable, even with minimal incentives. The project would have a mission patch - lower level donors would get a sticker, higher amounts get an actual patch." Lunadyne says, "The image of the Lunar Search & Rescue patch I posted on the Facebook page got a strong response." Lunadyne says, "Just out of curiosity Paul, would three votes change any of the results?" Lunadyne says, "I'm praying for no write-ins..." Lunadyne says, "Am I connected?" Strangelv-1 says, "It depends on how high the goal line is and how high the strench gols are. The stretch goals require higher funding in abel to find, and some of them are often for everyone above a given level regardless of when they kicked in" Strangelv-1 says, "I see you" Lunadyne says, "Hmmm...things is mighty quiet." Strangelv-1 says, "How many posters do we have remaining? That could be onre of the goals, but make it limited so we don't run out" Strangelv-1 says, "Synchronized distraction" Strangelv-1 says, "We're obviously out of synch" Lunadyne says, "Roll Call" dcarson says, "tons" Strangelv-1 isn't part of the mangement committee pjbanyai says, "Without stating the final numbers Kenneth J. Murphy-win, Peter Kokh-win, Ben Nault-win, Alan Steinberg-win" dcarson says, "we can easily give away several hundred and still have tons" Strangelv-1 looks at Paul Lunadyne says, "Is that with the paper ballots?" Strangelv-1 says, "Set a limit of 200?" Strangelv-1 says, "orset it higher than that" Lunadyne says, "the posters I got at the 2007 ISDC lasted for a while, but are all gone." Lunadyne says, "We could probably give some out at Moon Day." Strangelv-1 says, "If you've ogt room we need a way to send a bunch more to North Texas" pjbanyai says, "Paper ballots might make some results close by 1 number. IE it would be a close race between Ben and Alan if we only had one Director position open." Lunadyne says, "I would like to do a new poster themed on The Moon Society." Scottyg says, "Paul, you should have the scanned ballots now." Lunadyne says, "Thanks Paul, I'll send an e-mail to Philip." Lunadyne says, "And to Alan. Congrats Ben." Strangelv-1 says, "Yes, we do need to step away from the ASI stuff as we were never meant to be the ASI. OTOH, ASI wasn't supposed to become comatose and unresponsive" bnault says, "Congrats to everyone!" Strangelv-1 claps. Strangelv-1 says, "It would help if we could create a replacement for ASI for teh role it was supposed to provide" dcarson says, "I can ship a box full easily" Strangelv-1 says, "a replacement for ASI"s reference mission might be a start in that direction" Lunadyne says, "I tried snagging some IP for TMS. There was a manga series called Earthlight. Only two volumes were ever published, and the third was offered online. All of that is now gone and the property seems dormant." Strangelv-1 hmms. Lunadyne says, "So I contacted the creator, who referred me to the copyright holder, who indicated that the property was in development for TV." Strangelv-1 says, "development hell, I presume" Lunadyne says, "Exactly." Strangelv-1 says, "When do the TV right expire, or are they perpetual?" Lunadyne says, "Didn't ask." dcarson says, "rather then investing in printing and storing a POD on through Cafe Press or similar might make more sense, or a Kickstarter project so you have perorders or it isn't printed" Lunadyne says, "I'd like to believe that there's a TV series about teenagers at a Moonbase in the works, but I honestly can't." Strangelv-1 says, "In the works, yes. ever to get to production -- not so confident" Lunadyne says, "Just another way that the gatekeepers keep good space content away from the public." dcarson says, "lots or properties are optioned but never actually have anything done" Strangelv-1 says, "MAybe come up with specs for our own script/story?" dcarson says, "writers love it, you get a nice chunk of money and then several years later you get the rights back to sell again" dcarson says, "and you don't get a movie/TV series made that mangles your story" Lunadyne says, "Which is why I firmly believe copyrights should expire at 21 years like they used to. It opens up the properties to cultural creativity." dcarson says, "agreed" Strangelv-1 says, "I could go with 21 years. Then, almost anything is less insane than what we have now" Strangelv-1 says, "What we have now is de facto permanant, with the biggest eyffect being that works disnappear permanantly, , possibyl errevokably when the last known copies are lost or lost track of" dcarson says, "and then you get stuff like the recent Princess of Mars, over a decade ago I saw a post form a writer who was part of the 6-7th? team of writers to work on the script" Lunadyne says, "In any event, I'm going to be keeping my eyes open for IP for TMS." Strangelv-1 says, "danke" pjbanyai says, "Ken-23 Peter-22 Ben-21 Alan-16 Philip-7 Number do not all add up to total ballots submitted due to missed punches and hanging chads:-)" Lunadyne says, "Princess of Mars sucked." Lunadyne says, "Haven't seen John Carter of Mars." dcarson says, "so whoknows how mant more before they finially filmed itwhen umpteen sets of writers work on it for 15-20 years you expct otherwise" Lunadyne says, "I would like to get my hands on the Moon Tycoon game." pjbanyai says, "Or votes for none of the above;)" Lunadyne says, "So wait...EVERYONE voted for me?" pjbanyai says, "Yes!" dcarson says, " http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6663/lunar-rails" Strangelv-1 says, "So no write-ins for Robert Zubrln?" Strangelv-1 says, "If we get a gam, we're going to have muliple editions as we tweak it" Strangelv-1 says, "Someone thinks of a good solutino the game doesn't allow, someone finds something the rules allow that wouldn't realyl work" Lunadyne says, "have you seen Sierra Madre Games' High Frontier? Soon to be updated for colonization: http://www.sierra-madre-games.com/conflict-simulations/#ecwid:category=482250&mode=product&product=11137394 " dcarson says, "might be worth putting a list of that sort together" Lunadyne says, "The one I'm thinking about now is an old Lunar Base game from 1993. Lunar Command" pjbanyai says, "If someone had voted for write in candidate ______________________________ I would have listed them. Even if there is no member "write in candidate ______________________________"-)" Lunadyne says, "http://www.bunnzy.org/games/simulation/lunar-command" Lunadyne says, "We do have permission to distribute the papercraft Moon globes from Moonposter.ie, but the PDFs are huge." Strangelv-1 . o O ( serious would need a firm arrow of continuity. Rather than serious opponents in the colony other than inevitnable potitical-style disagreements that could eventually prove the basis for splitting off a second colony, the sources of tension would be the environment and our inexperience in dealing with it -- regolith, heat stress, electricity, et c. Solutions occur, including designing new solutions and several episodes later replacements form Earth arrive made to those specifications ) Lunadyne says, "Anyone remember the "Return to the Moon" software that David Gump did for LunaCorp?" Strangelv-1 says, "We also have short stories donated by Tom Riley that are on scientifiction.org" Lunadyne says, "The Luanr Academy from that would be excellent to have on our website." dcarson says, " http://paizo.com/store/byCompany/c/cheapassGames/games/oneFalseStepForMankind" Lunadyne says, "Did not know that. Not seeing any content there." Strangelv-1: http://www.scientifiction.org/index.php?title=Free_Flyer Strangelv-1 : http://www.scientifiction.org/index.php?title=Category:Stories pjbanyai says, "Is there anyway we can get the right to republish Artemis Magazine articles? I know some well known writers had some stories which were only published in Artemis." Strangelv-1 says, "It's beet fgetting hit by garbage. I need to clear that out, but even more than that we need to figuer out what we're oging to do with it. There's an overdue not yet implemented renaming to exofiction, but that's a separate matter" Strangelv-1 says, "NOw THAT is a good point" Lunadyne says, "Good idea, Paul. Maybe even a special Kindle edition of lost treasures." Strangelv-1 says, "We need to talk to Ian Randall Strock about that" dcarson says, "magazines usually only but first serial rights, to reprint you pay the author" Strangelv-1 says, "I'd go for reprenting whole issues" Lunadyne says, "Agreed if we could get permission for that." Strangelv-1 says, "..p.if we can afford the rights or the rights allow for reprints" dcarson says, "usually not, authors sell specific rights" dcarson says, "reprint rights are cheaper usually" Lunadyne says, "Dana, I have a whole collection of games in the Lunar Library. Got both One False Step and the sequel." dcarson says, "but you'd have to deal with everyone in a issue to reprint the issue" Lunadyne says, "Where would I find that content?" dcarson says, "Artemis Magazine? is paper only" Lunadyne says, "dang." dcarson says, "I might have extras of most issies I can send you" Lunadyne says, "I'd be interested in seeing those." dcarson says, " http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?26582" dcarson says, "list of all issues, links show what was in each" Lunadyne says, "Nice" dcarson says, "needs cleaning up and merging it looks like" Lunadyne says, "Still, I'd like to see the original content." pjbanyai says, "Amazon currently has a few Artemis magazines for sale. We could purchase them with the Amazon account. They vary in price between $4.99 and $7.50." dcarson says, " http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/publisher.cgi?11311" dcarson says, "works better, the magazin listing is missing some issues" Lunadyne says, "Paul, what I'll do is scan the relevant stuff and circulate pdfs to the leadership." dcarson says, "I have dups of many, email where to send them and I'll send you what I have" Strangelv-1 says, "That could be an obvious low-quantity incentive for large kickstart donations: get one or more authors to autograph?" Lunadyne says, "Please include the check for the Lunar Sample Bags as well. $178 IIRC. We got a lot of visibility from that investment." dcarson says, "Ian might have many copies, depends on if he trashed all the extras" Strangelv-1 says, "if he has them find out what his price is for most of what he has?" Lunadyne says, "We should check with him and capture those if he hasn't." dcarson says, "the way printing costs work you get a lot of copies even for a small magazine" dcarson says, "if he hasn't managed to sell them we won't so paying money to get many copies is a waste" lesausl says, "Mickey says its 9:55pm here. (Central)" Lunadyne says, "I'd only want them for free. Maybe we'd pay the shipping." dcarson says, "IIRC one issue the best deal he could get meant having twice as many printed and half trashed by the printer" dcarson says, "because that was the minumum print run they did" Lunadyne says, "Part of why no one prints anymore." Lunadyne says, "As Bryce noted, we're down to our last five minutes. Any other important issues?" dcarson says, "nope" Lunadyne says, "Oh, Paul, can you get the election results to Peter this evening? He indicated the next issue of MMM is ready to hit the press." Strangelv-1 says, "We don't need to move a lot of thebm for them to be worthwhile. Simply having them to pad what we have to offer helps. ...And if there's not going to be reprints, we need the supply to last moer or less indefinitely" bnault says, "the web site..." Lunadyne says, "Yeah, I'm looking at them more as something for the "nifty new member kit", or handouts, or other discretionary use." Strangelv-1 says, "We should probably adjust the prices as the number of remaining issues gets low -- priced not to sel,l but to make suer anyone buying is really serious about having it." pjbanyai says, "Ebay has Artemis "Science & Fiction For A Space-Faring Age" Issue #1 for $10" Lunadyne says, "We moved to website a while back. What's up, Ben?" bnault says, "I guess since we are pressed by time, I could send an email to begin a discussion. Unless, we have a few more minutes...?" Lunadyne says, "We can keep discussing after the recorder goes off at 10pm, in 2 minutes by my clock." Strangelv-1 doesn't object to continuing, but he doesn't have a vote bnault says, "I would like to put something on the table for us to think about and discuss at the next meeting." Strangelv-1 says, "Or someone could move to extend time" Lunadyne says, "Don't be coy, Ben, what's up?" bnault says, "The web site is a perennial issue that seems to never die or get resolved. Maybe 3 yrs ago we had a long discussion about what needed to be done but we seem to get bogged down because of the current architecture and also maybe emotional attachment to some content or site features. The current issues or problems may signal that it is time we finally did something radical. " Lunadyne says, "I am getting increasing feedback in that regard." bnault says, "I would propose or suggest we forget about the current site and start work on a new site: new content architecture, new content management system, new server. We build it from scratch. No need to copy what we have now. I think Ken proposed a revised content architecture some months ago and that should be our starting point. Once we have a good basic site (10 good "pages/sections" or so should be sufficient), we make live - simply redirect the DNS. And then we add to it progressively, as needed and only if it is good content. My hypothesis is that a small well-designed up-to-date web site will perform better for us than a bloated antiquated site." Lunadyne says, "One significant problem is that we don't have a team to throw at the task." pjbanyai says, "James as an advisor you can vote to advise on subjects to be brought up for discussion by the Management Committee members." Strangelv-1 agrees with that entire paragraph for the most part Lunadyne says, "But I agree with Ben. We've got to update to the ways that people connect with the internet now - smartphones, iPads, etc." Strangelv-1 says, "vote is the wrong term unless I'm missing something. I have voice" dcarson says, "one person would be enough if they are willing to put the time in" dcarson says, "and has much less overhead then a team" bnault says, "part of the problem is that we have gone through this so many times, that we no longer want to think about it" Strangelv-1 says, "and a central person doing most of the work doesn't need approval until after the fact" dcarson says, "but we would have to not micro manage, approve the design and leave them mostly alone" Lunadyne says, "Is there someone here that would be willing to shoulder the burden?" bnault says, "that partly why I propose 10 pages or so, no more to begin...smaller scope, easier to manage" Strangelv-1 doesn't trust himself to deliver, but would be willing to attempt in the absence of a healthier volunteer Lunadyne says, "I agree on the approach. Give a basic structure, get some theme suggestions, but otherwise let them get the work done." Scottyg says, "Just don't forget about one thing - Our server is a lot more than what is seen by the public. It provides our membership system, much of our accounting, team management, etc." bnault says, "before we assign team roles, could we discuss site content architecture first. Ken can you locate what you proposed a few months ago?" Lunadyne says, "Let me look..." Strangelv-1 says, "The back-end is my concern, but we could tie the back-end into the new site afhter we've got the new site into adequate shape" bnault says, "keep the server for the operations tasks: membership, accounting, etc. Move the site off to some new server." pjbanyai says, " http://www.moonsociety.org//ken-index-1.html" bnault says, "operations tasks do NOT need to be tied to the website, in any fashion." lesausl says, "Gentlemen this discussion is well beyond my scope and I need to sign off. Is this matter somethging likely to require a vote tonight?" Strangelv-1 says, "is a vote needed or just a 'yeah, let's do it'?" bnault says, "as i said, let's think about it and resume the discussion next meeting" lesausl says, "Works for me!" bnault says, "or via email on the leader's list" lesausl says, "Also good. . ." Lunadyne says, "Okay, still looking. Do we have a motion to adjourn?" lesausl says, "I so cmove" bnault says, "motion to adjourn" Lunadyne says, "In favor?" dcarson says, "second" lesausl says, "Aye" bnault says, "aye" dcarson says, "aye" pjbanyai says, "No need to vote. If we can get Guidstar profile fully updated we can then get dreamhost account and google account setup." lesausl has disconnected. bnault says, "Ken, when you find your ideas on content architecture...send it via email to the leaders..and we can discuss...." Strangelv-1 says, "That definitely sounds like a plan" Strangelv-1 says, "Another action item once we do that is to migrate the wikis' off of Mike's Dreamhost account" Lunadyne says, "Paul, I'm getting caught up to the point where I'm going to get to the guideStar stuff soon." Strangelv-1 says, "We have five of them" Strangelv-1 says, "...and more domain names are needing to be renewed again. I'd like to get them out of my GoDaddy! account -- if for no other reason than I no longer want to do business with GoDaddy!" pjbanyai says, "I believe Dreamhost also has $15 certification." The housekeeper arrives to cart lesausl off to bed. Strangelv-1 says, "My default plan is to move things to MIke's accounta nd pay for them there, but a Moon Society account would be more appropriate, and would have more people at the controls to ensure the domains don't expire" Lunadyne says, "Let's get ahead of the game on Certs." Strangelv-1 says, "What's the plan?" Lunadyne says, "Who takes care of setting up Alan with his MOO access now that he's BoD?" Strangelv-1 says, "Also, the society may be less likely to flat run out of money. I'm comfortable right now, but I've been really impoverished in the past, and right nrow Mike's in at least as bad a shape as I was." Strangelv-1 says, "MOO access would be Dana or RAndall" Strangelv-1 says, "Also, depending on events, I could rather abruptly be in dire shape again" Lunadyne says, "TMS should be paying for those, which argues for consolidation." pjbanyai says, "I thought any current member could login with their teamdir username and password. Moon-Leader room access requires an invitation." Strangelv-1 says, "I can't really remember the process" Strangelv-1 says, "There's a step after creation of a TeamDirector account" Strangelv-1 says, "Which may still require the involvement of Dana or Randall" Strangelv-1 says, "It would probably help to have more wizards" pjbanyai says, "i just added Philip and Alan to the Leadership team." pjbanyai says, "and added you again James." Strangelv-1 says, "Thank you" Lunadyne says, "One of the help wanted ads in the next MMM will be for web help." Strangelv-1 says, "HOpefulyl I won't get bumped again for at last 10 months" Strangelv-1 wonders what he would need ot do to re-add himself to the NEA list he was the nominal leader of bnault says, "Need to go gentlemen...g'night!" Strangelv-1 says, "LAter" bnault has disconnected. --End log: Wednesday, August 1, 2012 11:31:21 pm ASI Meeting Server time --
