-- Start log: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 9:15:54 pm ASI Meeting Server time -- PhilipC says, "Good to see some familiar faces." PhilipC says, "Welcome to the 2014 September 17 Management Committee Meeting. We were supposed to meet last week but postponed a week due to technical difficulties." PhilipC says, "For the purpose of taking attendance, will all who are present please state your name and position." PhilipC says, "Philip Crume, Chairman" AlanSteinberg says, "Alan Steinberg, Director" pjbanyai says, "Paul Banyai, Vice President" Lunadyne says, "Ken Murphy, President" Strangelv-1 says, "James Gholston, socretary" PhilipC says, "Dana?" PhilipC says, "I see Dana is listed as present in the "@who" search but isn't speaking up" dcarson says, "sorry" dcarson says, "Dana Carson, Treasurer" PhilipC says, "Let the record show that we do have quorum. Also, for our secretary, the meeting started at 9:15 pm EDT." PhilipC says, "I'll leave the floor open for 3 minutes if anyone would like to add something to the agenda." PhilipC [to speed]: things up, if you do not have anything to suggest. Please say so. PhilipC says, "To speed things up, if you do not have anything to suggest. Please say so."" Lunadyne says, "Nothing that can be kept short" PhilipC says, "Remember, we're simply adding items to the agenda. Not having discussions or comments" PhilipC says, "Ok, moving on" PhilipC says, "Let's start with the reports. Ken, do you have anything for the membership report?" Lunadyne says, "Membership stands at 137, +1 from last month" PhilipC says, "That's a good thing. I would add that on our Facebook page, I seem to be adding 2-7 people per day. It seems like an untapped resource for membership." dcarson says, "about one of the new a day seems to be a spammer" Lunadyne says, "we've posted membership-themed posts there in the past, but they never seem to translate." PhilipC says, "It seems that our membership is somewhat on the uptick" PhilipC says, "I suspect that it's probably a residual from the Mars Society." Lunadyne says, "I'm trying to keep a slow but steady trickle of Moon-themed posts on Facebook" Lunadyne says, "How would it be a residual from Mars Society?" PhilipC says, "Similar name perhaps? Just a guess." PhilipC says, "The sources seem to be indiscriminate. " PhilipC says, "Does anyone else have comments regarding membership?" Strangelv-1 says, "Rose is still havingc technical difficulties and sends hera pologies" PhilipC says, "It would be nice if she can send us an email on the listserv to let us know how she's coming along." Lunadyne says, "I have nothing else on membership" PhilipC says, "Thank you." PhilipC says, "If there's nothing else on membership, let's move on to the Treasurer's Report. Dana, do you have anything for us?" dcarson says, "I'm plannng on going to Philcon fliers would be good to put out" dcarson says, "in response to Peters note about MMM finances I'm working on what we owe" dcarson says, "they need to get me data but I can get a lot of it done" dcarson says, "no other unusual expenses" Lunadyne says, "I'm trying to remember what I did with the leftover postcards from Moon Day. Maybe we could forward those. When is Philcon?" dcarson says, "Nov 21-23" dcarson says, "so plenty of time" PhilipC says, "Will we be reserving a table for that?" dcarson says, "just don't want to be trying to get something a week before" dcarson says, "no table, I don't want to try to run one by myself" dcarson says, "but stuff for the freebie table is good and probably n Ian's table i the dealers room" Lunadyne says, "I do have Carpe Lunam buttons. Those are popular (h/t to James!)" PhilipC says, "Fair enough." pjbanyai says, "The Science Channel recently re-aired the Man VS the Universe episode about Returning to the Moon. This could have prompted some new interest in the Moon." dcarson says, "listing out zazzle store on the fliers might be good" PhilipC says, "About that..." Lunadyne says, "Syfy just aired "High Moon", based on John Christopher's 'The Lostus Caves'" Lunadyne says, "Lotus" PhilipC says, "I'm still working on the Zazzle store. I had some artwork removed due to supposed copyright infringement related to using Buzz Aldrin's Man on the Moon photo." PhilipC says, "I've even had some products removed for infringement on our own logo! " Lunadyne says, "Re: store - that's an interesting collection of stuff. If it's the NASA photo of Buzz on the Moon there can't be copyright infringement" Lunadyne says, "I'm coming around to the idea of splurging on TMS polos for leaders who do outreach." PhilipC says, "I need to get our logo copyrighted. I also need to call Zazzle to restore those products they removed." PhilipC says, "I hope that everyone here has had the chance to check out the Zazzle store?" PhilipC says, "I hope the product offering is decent enough." PhilipC says, "In case you haven't checked out the store, here's the link: http://www.zazzle.com/the_moon_society" PhilipC says, "I'm trying to work around some of the artwork, since it only allows me to have transparent backgrounds by substituting white for transparent, which interferes with the white part of our logo" PhilipC says, "Maybe if I make the logo slightly off-white, I can go around that problem." Strangelv-1 has disconnected. The housekeeper arrives to remove Strangelv-1. PhilipC says, "As far as the rest of the agenda tonight though. I'd like to ask all of you if the approach that I suggested before for our new strategic direction, which involves a shift towards teleoperations is something you still support? I feel like we're making glacial progress on the website and that we need to be farther than we are right now." Strangelv-1 arrives. PhilipC says, "Is everyone reading me? I hope I'm not getting a connectivity problem here again." AlanSteinberg says, "reading ya" dcarson says, "reading you" Lunadyne says, "Philip, as the lead for that initiative, what would you suggest to help accelerate the process?" Strangelv-1 reboots again and unplugs his mouse. HE attempts to get to the other machine to swipe teh mouse from it but is having significant mobility issues right now Lunadyne says, "Is it just cut-n-paste at this point? Or back-end coding?" PhilipC says, "The biggest problem is that we're bottled necked with Scotty. Rose is supposed to focus mostly on web maintenance. I'm still learning php and MySQL. James is focused on other issues unrelated to us." PhilipC says, "Scotty just doesn't seem to have the time." Lunadyne says, "What is he focused on, and can we get it somewhere else?" PhilipC says, "He's mainly focused on migrating links from the old site to the new one. I sense that our main issues at this point are no longer content related (the main focus of the migration) to structural." PhilipC says, "What I'd like to see is a social media platform that gives us chat-forums-blogs and some form of audio and video conferencing, which will be necessary for teleoperations." PhilipC says, "Once we have that ready, then we can work with a university partner to host our lab, equipment, and maybe a teleoperated robot or two." PhilipC says, "We'll need to work out any bugs and then we'll be ready to start a massive recruiting campaign." PhilipC says, "But Scotty is only one person who can only do so much, and he's volunteering his time." pjbanyai says, "Reminder about Google Apps curently working pages. Admin: https://admin.google.com/moonsociety.org/; email: http://mail.google.com/a/moonsociety.org; calendar: http://www.google.com/calendar/hosted/moonsociety.org, Drive: http://drive.google.com/a/moonsociety.org; and Groups(forum and mailinglist): http://groups.google.com/a/moonsociety.org" Lunadyne says, "Paul brings up a good point. I know a lot of the leadership has their issues with Google (and I don't disagree), but I'm not uncomfortable using their tools for this. I'm not really concerned about them mining Moon stuff from us." PhilipC says, "I would like to see a working group that includes some new faces beyond the regular IT folks here." pjbanyai says, "Urls can not be changed to our site without DNS modification. The email is also not able to route correctly for receiving email without access to DNS and telling the domain server to send a copy to google or even greengeeks incoming mail servers. " PhilipC says, "At this point, I'm willing to go with Google for a little while until we can mature our own capabilities. The sooner we can buy some robots and do simple tasks, the sooner we can get out of this dead calm we're in." PhilipC says, "I think most of us agree that offering members some projects they can participate in is vital for our success." Lunadyne says, "agreed" PhilipC says, "Paul, do you have access to our Google accounts?" dcarson says, "yes, either that or up MM to National Geographic quality so they are willing to be a member just for that" Strangelv-1 says, "Which is a good reminder taht we need to find an editor to take over after Peter steps down" Strangelv-1 says, "Yreferably mbeforle the lasct minute so there can be anorganized transition" PhilipC says, "I still feel that we might consider replacing MMM with a more contemporary media format, such as blogs, audio, or video. Since there's already the space show, I don't know if we can add to that all that much. That leaves blogs or video" Strangelv-1 says, "Supplementing I could support. For the foreseeable future I believe we need to maintain it" pjbanyai says, "Yes I have access to our Google for Nonprofits and Google Apps account as well as Moon.Society.International@gmail.com email account. I do not have access to our Google ads account which was set up by Michael Mealling as well as possibly some other gmail accounts." PhilipC says, "I'm not able to access our Google account. I keep getting put in a loop at the sign on page" PhilipC says, "Paul, can you make sure that everyone here is added to that? Let's try to put together a demonstration of what it can do before our next meeting here." Lunadyne says, "I think we should keep the newsletter format, even if we end up moving entirely to something like a printable pdf each month." PhilipC says, "I've been saying for almost the last 6 months that I'd like for us to move to a videoconferencing meeting format here." Lunadyne says, "And I've been suggesting for six months that we use Google Hangout for that." AlanSteinberg says, "so, what's next on the agenda, I feel like this is just general chit chat and its happening slowly at that" PhilipC says, "Yes that could mean that everyone might need to clean up the room behind them, making sure that you're all well lit, and that you look nice" PhilipC says, "but that's a small price to pay for having much more efficient meetings." dcarson says, "I have no camera or mike" PhilipC says, "I guess the main issue here is do we need to hire a web master, which we discussed before, or simply try out the Google apps first. It seems like the Google apps would be a reasonable way to go first." PhilipC says, "Instead of diving too deeply on the robots at first, we could consider holding a robotics competition, and then using the robots developed from them for future use." Strangelv-1 says, "There are certian to be Drupal modules to handle these features. If we're going to hire someone, one of their main purposes would be to manage Drupal modules and content handling (the content at all we mostly have at this point if I correctyl understand)" PhilipC says, "But we can cross that bridge when we get to it." PhilipC says, "I think that's everything for now." PhilipC says, "Unless anyone would like something to add?" Lunadyne says, "The Moonbots kit that GLXP put together might serve as a good example - the robot has to perform a series of tasks like moving He3 cannisters to the launch pad, water to the greenhouses, and a variety of other tasks relevant to working on the Moon." pjbanyai says, "All Leaders including Ben have apps accounts. Speaking of Ben, do we have a final tally for the election or are we extending it another month and do we have a prospects to replace Ben?" Lunadyne says, "Prospect-wise, Chris Carson and Brad Blair are the first names that come to mind." PhilipC says, "I'm thinking more like: scooping up regolith, transporting it to a cart, having the cart deliver the payload to a central processing area, sifting and refining the material, and melting/applying it to molds" PhilipC says, "Alan, if you need to go, feel free to do so." A small swarm of 3x5 index cards arrives, engulfs Strangelv-1, and carries it away. A small swarm of 3x5 index cards blows in and disperses, revealing Strangelv-1. Strangelv-1 does not know if the minuets wera pproved PhilipC says, "James, we can do that next time." Lunadyne says, "Give me an idea for an article. I've been having writer's block, as if I feel I've already covered everything already." Strangelv-1 says, "What about a Moon DAy recap?" dcarson says, "a 3D printer that uses regoith simulant would be a good project" pjbanyai says, "I think the latest we have held the Annual meeting has been in November. We need a state of the Society Annual report from Ken and a 30 day prior public announcement." Strangelv-1 says, "If we get a date for the annual meeting we could post that." Lunadyne says, "State of the Society - I'm on it." PhilipC says, "The important part of doing projects is having a shared space for everyone to communicate on it." PhilipC says, "Hence the need for forums, chatrooms, blogs, and tele/video-conferencing." PhilipC says, "It would help if I can get a new face to help out on this" PhilipC says, "If there's nothing else to add here, does anyone have an objection to adjourning early tonight?" PhilipC says, "If not, would someone like to make a motion to do so?" AlanSteinberg says, "Move to adjourn" pjbanyai says, "The next board meeting is in November." PhilipC says, "Thank you Paul" PhilipC says, "Alan moved. Is there a second?" Strangelv-1 says, "I must admit that I'm not realyl in any condition to do much this evening and would not object to ending the meeting., although I'm suer I'll regret not being abte no get X, Y, and Z covered later" dcarson says, "second" PhilipC says, "Dana seconds. If there is no objection to adjournment, we are hearby adjourned." PhilipC says, "Thank you all for coming. Hopefully in October, or November at the latest, we'll start to see some real progress here. It'll be good for all of us to see some forward motion here." PhilipC says, "We are now adjourned." Lunadyne has disconnected. PhilipC says, "Time for adjournment is 10:27 PM EDT." PhilipC says, "I will use my discretionary budget if I need to in order to authorize the the cost of the copyright on our logo." -- End log: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 10:29:05 pm ASI Meeting Server time --
