-- Start log: Wednesday, February 1, 2012 9:00:17 pm ASI Meeting Server time -- Lunadyne says, "Howdy everyone! Welcome to the Feb 1 Leadership meeting." Lunadyne says, "Roll Call:" Lunadyne says, "Here" dcarson says, "here" pjbanyai says, "here" Chard says, "Here" alanzaldua says, "Here." Scottyg says, "Here, but not a voting member towards a quorum." alanzaldua says, "I'm not a voting member either because I" Lunadyne says, "I don't think Al is either. " alanzaldua says, "I'm only a Director nominee. :(" Lunadyne says, "Looking at our membership list, it looks like we're flat from last week." Lunadyne says, "144 current members." Lunadyne says, "As I noted in correspondence, we were approached by Silver Marketing for a copy of our membership list." alanzaldua says, "Yes, and I understood no one was for it. " Lunadyne says, "Upon inquiring as to the reason for the request, I was told that NSS wanted to send an 'Acquisition Mailing'." alanzaldua says, "What is that exactly?" Lunadyne says, "As Al just noted, no one was in favor, and upon review of the MoU I found that we had no obligation to do so under our affiliation status." pjbanyai says, "Bylaws seem a little fuzzy on voting ability of appointed officers. I plan on working on a spreadsheet to try and figure out who has access to what rights in what meetings." bnault has arrived. Lunadyne says, "I informed Silver Marketing this week that we were declining. The reason was that NSS had not communicated with us about this." Lunadyne says, "Hi Ben! I think we now have a quorum. " bnault says, "hi everyone!" Lunadyne says, "Now that we have a quorum, I want to move the tax situation to the top of the agenda." alanzaldua says, "OK." Lunadyne says, "Here's the story. In 2007, it was required that tax-exempts file a 990-N postcard." dcarson says, "I'd have doubhts about how accuratly a marketing firm was representing the thing anyway -)" alanzaldua says, "And did we file such?" Lunadyne says, "This was apparently an annual requirement, as opposed to a notification to the IRS that we don't make squat, money-wise." dcarson says, "I did then, I didn't know or forgot to in later years" Scottyg says, "Al, that was a new requirement. We were initially unaware of the requirement." Lunadyne says, "Paul said he found a 2009 filing." alanzaldua says, "So what R the repercussions?" Lunadyne says, "The 2009 filing may be our saving grace. There was a formal grace period back in 2010 for those who did not file in 2007-2009." Lunadyne says, "The repercussions are that we are probably going to have to pay a CPA to get the situation straightened out." pjbanyai says, "I have reviewed Greg's original NSS proposal. Originally Randall was possibly going to link our Teamdir Account to theirs in a similar manner to ASI's. However teamdir is still not able to work with complex user management policies. Ideally NSS members would have had limited access to project teams and a single chapter team and vice versa." Scottyg says, "There is still a 3 year grace period, but I'm not quite sure how to interpret that." Lunadyne says, "The IRS website points to commercial firms that provide tax services to file past-year 990-Ns." alanzaldua says, "Can someone contact the IRS first to see what can be done before calling in a CPA?" Scottyg says, "The repercussions of going past the grace period are rather severe." Lunadyne says, "And 2012 is three years from 2009." Scottyg says, "We lose our tax-exempt status and have to start over. That is a major pain." dcarson says, "so if we do something now it should probably be a easish fix" Scottyg says, "I would file a 990-N for 2011 immediately." dcarson says, "will do" alanzaldua says, "Yes!" pjbanyai says, "we still have exemption. However the IRS had processing errors with the 2009 form and have not neccessarily been able to confirm our exemption with third parties." Lunadyne says, "I would contact a tax CPA immediately. I do note that the bylaws call for an annual audit." Scottyg says, "That may fix the problem although we really should file a 990-N for the missing years." dcarson says, "If you do not file your e-Postcard on time, the IRS will send you a reminder notice. There is no penalty assessment for late filing the e-Postcard, but an organization that fails to file required e-Postcards (or information returns Forms 990 or 990-EZ) for three consecutive years will automatically lose its tax-exempt status. The revocation of the organizations tax-exempt status will not take place until the filing due date of the third year." dcarson says, "Due Date of the e-Postcard" dcarson says, "The e-Postcard is due every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of your tax year. For example, if your tax year ended on December 31, the e-Postcard is due May 15 of the following year. If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is the next business day. You cannot file the e-Postcard until after your tax year ends." dcarson says, "have we recieved any notices?" Lunadyne says, "What is our tax year?" Scottyg says, "And the online form only supports the current year (2011). You have to have other years filed by someone who does "efiling"." Lunadyne says, "Please say 12/31." Scottyg says, "Dana, no." Scottyg says, "Our yax year is the calendar year." Lunadyne says, "Whew!" alanzaldua says, "So we are OK if we file asap?" dcarson says, "will file for 2011 after the meeting" Lunadyne says, "I was worried that it was August, in which case we were hosed." Scottyg says, "I think tat will get us by, but I still advise getting the forms filed for the missing years. That may cost us a nominal amount." Lunadyne says, "The tax CPA should be able to take care of the e-filing. They would need to see the books for the years to be filed." dcarson says, "I'll email the cpa I use for my taxes if thats OK" Scottyg says, "Dana, please do NOT show Artemis Society as an affiliated organization." Lunadyne says, "I absolutely believe that this is worth spending money for." Lunadyne says, "Dana, ask him specifically about the form 990-N, not just generic tax-exempt." dcarson says, "and I did file the user ID and password from last time I filed so I can login that way" Scottyg says, "Absolutely Ken. It will take hundreds of hours to fix the problem if we lose our exemption." dcarson says, "will do" alanzaldua says, "Someone will have to call me to explain the Artemis situation. " Lunadyne says, "That login info needs to be part of our web asset directory." Scottyg says, "And even if we get it fixed, it may not be retroactive." Scottyg says, "That means donations made during the loss of exemption become taxable." alanzaldua says, "Ouch!" Lunadyne says, "Artemis Society was our forebearer, but went defunct about time TMS started. We've used Artemis Society as a dba in the past." alanzaldua says, "Thx. " Scottyg says, "Never actually as a dba, but that seems to show in some records." pjbanyai says, "The last 990n had doing business name as Artemis Society. It should be 1)The Moon Society 2) Moon Society International or simply 3) Moon Society" Lunadyne says, "So the action items are 1) file the 2011 form 990-N immediately. 2) Contact tax CPA about e-filing for past years." Scottyg says, "Artemis Society never filed for Federal recognition and I think it just raises red flags to show any relationship." Lunadyne says, "We need the CPA to give us a clean bill of health that we can provide for the web accounts." kokhmmm has arrived. alanzaldua says, "Hi Peter!" Lunadyne says, "Hi Peter! We're just discussing the tax situation." kokhmmm says, "Hi Guys" Scottyg says, "Yes, and then take some action to prevent this from happening in the future. Such as creating a checklist for the Treasurer." kokhmmm says, "I had not installed a Java plug in - never thought about it - why I am late" pjbanyai says, "Hi Peter" Chard waves. alanzaldua says, "Maybe Dana can make the checklist and pass it to his successor?" Lunadyne says, "Since we have a quorum, can I get an initial budget and approval for the Tax CPA? I'm thinking no more than $500, should be closer to $200-300." dcarson says, "it wants a principle officier, list me as tres or should I list pres?" Chard has been praying for your sanity Peter... with the loss of data (laptops) as of late... Lunadyne says, "I'm the principal officer. Subject me to the slings and arrows of outrageous tax fortune!" kokhmmm says, "I am okay Jason, I take reversals in stride and always come out on top" dcarson says, "OK what address?" Lunadyne says, "That's our current P.O. Box, which is...ummm..." dcarson says, "the plano one?" Lunadyne says, "Scotty uses that one, right?" dcarson says, "yes" kokhmmm says, "P.O. Box 940825(Plano, TX 75094-0825" dcarson says, "not sure if they want that twice, they want the org mailing address and a principle officier address" pjbanyai says, "We can sign up for an account at http://nccsdataweb.urban.org/PubApps/regis/register.php to manage official NonProfit statistics for the IRS. I will also reinvite everone to join Guidestar so we can work on their info." Lunadyne says, "That's what we show as the business address. For the principled principal officer it's: 5060 Addison Circle. Addison, TX 75001-6685." kokhmmm says, "5060 Addison Circle? I have 5015 Addison Circle #420" Lunadyne says, "That's the TMS PO Box." kokhmmm says, "okay" Lunadyne says, "The current one to replace the one you had." Lunadyne says, "I think it's what we show in MMM." Lunadyne says, "I do need to check that..." dcarson says, "OK, filed for 2011" Lunadyne says, "Sweet!" Scottyg says, "While we're discussing this area, I feel like i have to climb up on the soapbox with the President's permission." Lunadyne says, "The President yields." pjbanyai says, "It is possible that Dana's account for registering the 990n form is also usable for http://nccsdataweb.urban.org/ since Urban Institute manages the official 990n page." Lunadyne says, "That would be good." Scottyg says, "Running any organization without accurate financial data is risky to the point of being foolhardy." Lunadyne says, "Agreed." Scottyg says, "I'm sure in the work he does for a living, Ken would wholeheartedly agree with me." Scottyg says, "GMTA!" Lunadyne says, "You know it!" Scottyg says, "This organization has not had the benefit of any kind of reporting since I stepped down as Treasurer several years ago." Lunadyne says, "That's why I mentioned the bylaws mentioning an annual audit." dcarson says, "I've done a poor job" Scottyg says, "The only saving grace has been that as ex-treasurer, I have a pretty good idea of our expense structure and I've "kept my finger on the pulse" so to speak." dcarson says, "my campaig slogan was I'll do it if no one else will " Lunadyne says, "Dana, I did treasurer at Rotaract at the UN and sucked hard at it." Scottyg says, "It isn't much fun." Scottyg says, "But still necessary. I think what motivated me was the knowledge that I would be the one who had to fix the mess." kokhmmm says, "I can't manage myown books!" Lunadyne says, "Joe Redfield tried to recruit me to NSS bookkeeping." Lunadyne says, "Shudder." pjbanyai says, "Treasurer's Reports are supposed to be kept at http://www.moonsociety.org/private/leaders/treas-reports/ Non-Profit Tax Forms and Filings are supposed to be kept at http://www.moonsociety.org/private/leaders/non-profit" kokhmmm says, "Yup - NSSis a financiaal mess" Scottyg says, "So - we need to fix this problem too. And I think we've already let it go too long." Lunadyne says, "What do you propose?" Scottyg says, "I was keeping the books in QuickBooks, but going back several years and backfilling will be a major chore." dcarson says, "I have quickbooks, wmail me a how to and I can enter data" Lunadyne says, "Dang, answered my next question already." Scottyg says, "Ken, I don't know. I may be willing to tackle bringing the books up-to-date, but I will probably stipulate that we have a solution that prevents this happening in the future. Maybe we should consider hiring a CPA?" Scottyg says, "Dana, I'm not sure I can send a how-to that would cover all the cases." dcarson says, "dont know if we need a CPA, the big problem is the data entry I think " kokhmmm says, "That soounds ike a legitimate expense. Shoould we ask the membership in case we have a CPA mongst us?" dcarson says, "we can discuss in email, if you can cover most I can at least get that done for us" Lunadyne says, "I imagine a lot of it is just things like membership receipts, postage expenses. The pins." Scottyg says, "We might need to schedule some online sessions here or perhaps with Skype where we can interact." dcarson says, "I'm here most afternoons and evenings Scotty" Lunadyne says, "This does need to be a priority. I'd like to get the bulk of things straightened out by the end of the first calendar quarter." Scottyg says, "Yes Ken, most of it is just routine gathering of information and data entry. Some adjustments require a little broader knowledge of accounting practice." Lunadyne says, "If I get re-elected, I would like to have a set of audited books for my two-year reign of error." Lunadyne says, "It's part of why I've been reluctant to spend much money. I don't have a good feel for where we stand." Scottyg says, "Me too Dana, so let's agree to work on that soon. I'll be on vacation next week so it will be week after before I can begin. And I'd like to keep it down to 1-2 hours per evening." dcarson says, "sounds good" pjbanyai says, "The IRS has some advice information to help out nonprofits with this issue." dcarson says, "not going to get done overnight, if we get done in a month or so I'll be happy" Scottyg says, "Yes Paul, I've looked over some of that. It's scary enough that I decided to make a fuss tonight." Lunadyne says, "The first timeline is because I want to spend the 2nd quarter gettign things straightened out with folks like PayPal and Amazon. This is seriously crimping our ability to raise funds." Scottyg says, "Yep. And that's been hanging for about 2 years." alanzaldua says, "I missed the last 2 meetings. Were are we with Paypal now?" Lunadyne says, "That's why I want a professional to look things over and give us a clean bill of health. That CPA letter will do wonders." Scottyg says, "We may be non-profit, but we still have to act like a business." Lunadyne says, "Depends on what you mean by 'act like a business'. I'm not sure I can manage the modern forms of sociopathy." pjbanyai says, " http://www.stayexempt.irs.gov/ExistingOrganizations.aspx has a step by step guide for nonprofits. Recordkeeping is mentioned at http://www.stayexempt.irs.gov/VirtualWorkshop/Form990/recordkeeping.aspx" Lunadyne says, "I would like Scotty and Dana to have a budget to work with. Can I get a motion?" Lunadyne says, "Maybe?" Chard motions for a budget for Scotty and Dana to work with. Lunadyne says, "$ amount?" kokhmmm says, "Speaking of taxes. 3 days after April 15th, at our meeting on the 18th, Al Anzaldua will have his required one year of membership in and we can vote him in as an official board member to fil our vacancy." Chard says, "I pay my CPA around $200 to do my taxes.. and that's yearly... how often will we need the CPA?" Chard says, "and my taxes are fairly complicated... " Lunadyne says, "The bylaws call for audited annual statements. Given our financial resources, that may be excessive." Scottyg says, "I think we have to define the task(s) we want a CPA to do (and perhaps get a quote)before we can propose a budget." Scottyg says, "Ken, yes - I think the cost would be prohibitive." Lunadyne says, "But it may be a good idea to start each new presidential term with an audited set of books." alanzaldua says, "Sounds like a good idea. " Scottyg says, "If we want to cover the cost of Dana having his CPA get us square with the IRS, I would propose $500 as a starting point." Lunadyne says, "The main tasks I envision for the CPA are 1) backfilling the 990-Ns as much as possible and 2) giving us an unqualified statement on our books, which will support our other efforts. I agree that $500 is a good starting point." Scottyg says, "That may need revision after Dana talks to him." Lunadyne says, "Well, not spending this money may cost us everything." alanzaldua says, "Agreed. " alanzaldua says, "Can I ask how much we have in our budget? " dcarson says, "yeah" Lunadyne says, "It just hurts that there is so much better stuff we could be doing with that money (science fair scholarships?) instead of dealing with this crap." Lunadyne says, "Last I heard we had around $18K in the bank." alanzaldua says, "Thx." pjbanyai says, "After we get our National Center for Charitable Statistics prifile at the Urban Institute working right and our Guidestar profile up to the level of receiving a GuideStar Exchange Seal the next step is setting up Better Business Bureau profile. NSS has BBB profile listing us as an affiliate. BBB does not currently list us as a non-profit. They require even more detailed info than Guidestar does for their seal of approval." Scottyg says, "We have around $30K in the bank." Lunadyne says, "Paul, I see that as Q2 work. Q1 if we can get this straightened out quick." Lunadyne says, "Cool!" kokhmmm says, "I can remember when we had less than 10k" Lunadyne says, "So: Jason has moved that Dana and Scotty have a CPA budget, friendly amended at a $500 level. All in favor." alanzaldua says, "Things are looking up then, and it looks like we have a plan to get our fiscal house in order. " Scottyg says, "December 30, 2011 ending balance - $29,607.10" alanzaldua says, "Can't vote, but I" Lunadyne says, "Aye" Chard says, "aye" bnault says, "aye" Lunadyne says, "That's a majority of those present/" alanzaldua says, "Great!" Lunadyne says, "Present and voting. Oh wait, I think Peter made six, so we're only halfway." pjbanyai says, "aye" Lunadyne says, "There we go." Lunadyne says, "Okay, Dana and Scotty, you are go for launch." dcarson lights fuse and runs Lunadyne says, "Y'all know we're going to be asking for an update at the next meeting." PASSWORD [Guest] has arrived. Lunadyne says, "Hi [Guest]." kokhmmm says, "passwordis dave dunlop" alanzaldua says, "Hi Dave!" Lunadyne says, "Ah. Hi Dave!" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "HI" Lunadyne says, "Haven't gotten to ISDC yet." Lunadyne says, "Next spending item. We should reimburse Peter's chapter for half of the laptop." Lunadyne says, "This is the production mechanism for our main member benefit, the MMM." kokhmmm says, "That would be apreciated" dcarson says, "Peter can you chack if you can get it covered by renters insurance in case it happens again?" dcarson says, "and yes we should pay half" kokhmmm says, "Happy to say MMM is back and up & running - may publish #252 tomorrow plus M3iQ#13 as well." Lunadyne says, "Going in half would also be good for goodwill. I would also like to propose that an additional amount be allocated for security purposes. I'm sure Paul could help with some suggestions. :-)" alanzaldua says, "How much is needed to cover half?" kokhmmm says, "We are looking into insurance. The computer was 4 plus years old and my homeowners insuranc said it wasn't worth anything." pjbanyai says, "Hi dave. I thought you were a member yet you are not currently listed in teamdir." lesausl has arrived. alanzaldua says, "Hi Bryce!" Chard waves to all. Scottyg says, "One comment about financial statements. For an organization like ours with a relatively small number of transactions, the monthly financials are very ragged. Quarterly is much better but still somewhat up-and-down. Annuals are pretty reliable. I would propose quarterly as our reporting period." kokhmmm says, "Paul, I just checked. Dave is a currentmember thr Dec this year" lesausl says, "Hi all. Sorry I'm late. Did I miss the orgy?" Lunadyne says, "The tax orgy :(" lesausl says, "Ugh!" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "I think I'm a paid up member in good standing but I have shifted my time to NSS as I'm a Board member there for another several momths." lesausl says, "Did I miss any votes? (seriously)" Lunadyne says, "Now we're talking about reimbursing half the cost of Peter's laptop." lesausl says, "ok" lesausl says, "thanks" Lunadyne says, "Bryce, we voted to allocate Dana & Scotty $500 to cover initial CPA expenses in getting our 501c3 status straightened out. It is our top priority item." kokhmmm says, "I will have to get the figure. Macs cost more than PCs - we did get 3years warranty as an extra. about $1,200 without the extra warranty." lesausl says, "I guess so! So it is a 'go' to reimburse them?" Lunadyne says, "We're waiting to hear the cost of the laptop to figure out that bite." pjbanyai says, "teamdir seems to be acting up. Probably buggy since last meetings crash." Chard says, "you should let me install my support software in "stolen" laptop protection mode" Chard says, "so we can track it down if it happens again" Scottyg says, "Randall promises that the server problems are being addressed. (Hardware problem - new server is being built.)" alanzaldua says, "Good idea. a" Lunadyne says, "FWIW, I think that -not- paying half would be a very bad move. I also think that additional monies should be voted to cover security measures (insurance, cables, tracking software, whatever)." alanzaldua says, "And shouldn't there be a backup for the text?" alanzaldua says, "Backup storage of text I mean. " kokhmmm says, "Well we have an external drive and thinking of getting a second so that I can trade monthly with the LRS treasurer in case all is lost in a fire." Lunadyne says, "Do we know the cost of the laptop?" kokhmmm says, "I have recovered almost all my files except those before Mac OsX came out." Chard says, "granted, the likelyhood of it happening again - is less than it was before... " Scottyg says, "We can set up an area on the Moon Society server as a repository for backup." kokhmmm says, "I have taken several security measure." Lunadyne says, "Focus people - cost of laptop? It's in use, so we should have that number." alanzaldua says, "Peter, didn't you say it was $1200 without extras?" kokhmmm says, "Ken around 1,200 without warranty, $1,500 0ver all. the LRS treasurer bought it and I need to get the figure from him trying to call now." alanzaldua says, "Sounds like around $750 to me." Lunadyne says, "I was going to say $800-ish." Lunadyne says, "As I said, I want ridiculous security measures." PASSWORD [Guest] says, "Bob Bialecki I think has the receipt from when we wnet to the Apple store. I think Ken is closer to what I recall." pjbanyai says, "Apple store lists 13-inch: 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro at $1,199.00" kokhmmm says, "I just called Bob and he is not home right now" Lunadyne says, "Okay, this one can wait until the middle of the month." kokhmmm says, "Yes, plus tax, plus warrantee (3 yr)" Lunadyne says, "I want to talk about ISDC." kokhmmm says, "No problemo" Lunadyne says, "I've heard back from NSS HQ." dcarson says, "we know roughly how much and it seems a reasonable amount to me" Lunadyne says, "We have been given track time on Sunday." kokhmmm says, "That is great. Not prime time, but time nonetheless" Lunadyne says, "As everyone knows, this is the rump end of the conference. Filler, basically. Which means we have to make it zing!" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "I sent out a list of the program ideas that I discussed with Ken a coupe of days ago. Did anyone see that?" Lunadyne says, "We've got to blow everyone's minds with the awesomeness of what we present." Lunadyne says, "People are going to be heartbroken that they missed history being made." kokhmmm says, "I guess I will be heartbroken, saving for next year in San Diego." lesausl says, "Has there been agreement for a 'theme' to our presentation?" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "We should have a record of the lunar programming and perhaps post it on the web after the conference." Lunadyne says, "I noted a couple of possibilities: Next Gen Moon and Cislunar Symposium. There has been no agreement, but I wanted to get the feel of leadership before getting back to Josh." pjbanyai says, "Reminder next week we have a Town Hall Meeting. This would be a good time to get input on what to cover at the conference." lesausl says, "'. . .feel of leadership. . .' You mena 'pain and suffering', right?" Lunadyne says, "Yeah, yeah. ISDC's are miserable. I did one, remember?" lesausl says, "If I'm asked, I go for the lunar symposium theme." lesausl says, "Just sayin'. . ." alanzaldua says, "I vote for the Cis-lunar symposium." Lunadyne says, "Cislunar Symposium. A lot of it is LEO, GEO, and EML1." kokhmmm says, "Paul, our first town meeting a few years back was a blockbuster. After that almost no one attending - let's hope this one is better. I wil send out a notice to ALL members." PASSWORD [Guest] says, "Didn't anyone see the the categories and program notes I mentioned?" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "We have quiate a number of specific things." alanzaldua says, "Don't forget cis-lunar synchronizing with Earth-Moon resonant orbits." kokhmmm says, "Cislunar is not a term in popular currency. Ken did youget my suggestion for an alternative name?" Lunadyne says, "Dave, mine is blank. Did you send as attachment? (which got stripped)" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "That could be. If you like I can seend it again." alanzaldua says, "Peter, even econosphere will have to be explained i think. " Lunadyne says, "Put the text in the email. The server strips everything." Lunadyne says, "Cislunar is as good as it gets. It's a term we can make popular." alanzaldua says, "How about something like the cis-lunar econosphere?" Lunadyne says, "Say that three times quick." kokhmmm says, "There we go, Al!" lesausl says, "'cislunar' comes form ancient times. Latin i believe. Econosphere reminds me of the 'Economic Co-prosperity sphere' the Japanese talked about right before they marched into asia." kokhmmm says, "cis-lunar doesn't say $$$$ and that's what the other term tries to get across" alanzaldua says, "It would be nice to get the idea of prosperity into the term somehow. " kokhmmm says, "cis means "this side of" as in cisalpine" Lunadyne says, "I think we can go with Cislunar Econosphere." Lunadyne says, "Maybe CisLunar EconoSphere." kokhmmm says, "It will be our task to put that term on everyone's lips" alanzaldua says, "Yeah!" kokhmmm says, "Yes, the second capital letter." kokhmmm says, "or just a hyphen" alanzaldua says, "I vote for capial letter. " kokhmmm says, "That's one thing the Mars crowd can not talk about - they can just list costs, not profits" Lunadyne says, "We're going to need a dynamite lineup that focuses on business. I want younger speakers, too." pjbanyai says, "I have posted info abou next weeks meeting in all of our social networking groups and on Facebook page so far. By the way I have setup a new google mailing list for the Management Committee at management_committee@moonsociety.info will not strip out attachements. Until we can get a nonprofit google account we can only use moonsociety.info google apps account." Lunadyne says, "Paul, can you email around the P/W and U/N for the account to the officers?" lesausl says, "CLES will get confused with CELSS (remember that one. . .real zinger there!) and is not really a grabber." alanzaldua says, "Would it be possible to get someone from Space X to present?" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "I think cislunar is just fine. We can use a variety of different terms and the cislunar econosphere convery a volume of economic activity quite nicely." Lunadyne says, "What goes after the colon? As in - CisLunar EconoSphere: The Next Market Challenge" PASSWORD [Guest] says, "I sent out the ISDC Lunar program notes to Moon Leaders and to the inidividual e-mails I had. Did anyone get those? " kokhmmm says, "The Growing Market Challenge - aleady a quarter trillion bucks a year of business in GEO" Lunadyne says, "Just got them." PASSWORD [Guest] says, "That figure includes both commercial space and government space." kokhmmm says, "We need blockbuster presentations, videos would be nice (eventually)" Lunadyne says, "Greyfields for Growth" pjbanyai says, "I also setup super user account MoonSociety@moonsociety.info and will setup individual accounts for everyone. I setup Peter's ages ago." kokhmmm says, "Love it (greyfields for growth - why not gray - we aren't Brits)" kokhmmm says, "But color them green" Lunadyne says, "Sorry, grew up in England, can never remember which is which." Lunadyne says, "Greenfields is a term used in real estate." kokhmmm says, "spent 15 months there myself" Lunadyne says, "A greenfield development is from the ground up. i.e. there's nothing there but dirt and grass." pjbanyai says, "We can also look into linking the moonsociety.org email to the .info email until we can setup the non-profit account. I am not sure how Dana has the PairNic email set up." Lunadyne says, "I want to keep Dana focused on the tax situation for the moment." Lunadyne says, "Okay, running low on time. Anyone have other issues?" kokhmmm says, "Ken, I put the job description for MMM Editror in this issue with ranking priorities." alanzaldua says, "I take it we will finish with Peter's laptop next meeting?" kokhmmm says, "And I would like critical comments on the all new layout. I'm learning." Lunadyne says, "Let's hope someone answers the call. I'd like to have someone assisting you not only with the current MMMs, but also in prepping them for the e-readers." Lunadyne says, "Al, yes, I'm going to wait for more definitive #s." alanzaldua says, "Understood. " Lunadyne says, "Speaking of e-readers, how is that project going, Ben & Peter?" kokhmmm says, "We can divide the homework for prepping the MMM classics for kindle into tasks" kokhmmm says, "1-checking for dead links" Lunadyne says, "and hopefully finding replacements." kokhmmm says, "2- putting in 1 column format - I am all set up to that now, and will start on it in my idle time (between when I go to bed and when I wake up - LOL)" kokhmmm says, "Ben, I will send you the current issue and you can see if Kindle can handle it." bnault says, "Just waiting for a complete issue to convert to Kindle..." kokhmmm says, "I'll talk to you after the meeting about that" bnault says, "what format will it be in?" Lunadyne says, "On a completely different topic, a little something I found at mylocal Half-Price Books: http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayFulltext?type=1&pdftype=1&fid=7978747&jid=MAM&volumeId=17&issueId=01&aid=7978745" kokhmmm says, "I am using I-Work's Pages - I like it a lot better than Office or Open Office and it will open my old files but if this doesn't work for Kindle it's best we find out right away and then I will switch. I take it Kindle can't handle PDF." bnault says, "I can convert PDF to Word, then to Kindle" Scottyg says, "Unable to connect" Scottyg says, "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at journals.cambridge.org." Scottyg says, "The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few" Scottyg says, "moments." Scottyg says, "If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network" Scottyg says, "connection." Scottyg says, "If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure" Scottyg says, "that Firefox is permitted to access the Web." Lunadyne says, "I'm excited that we're making progress on this." Lunadyne says, "From Journals.cambridge.org you have to go to the back issues, 2011 (Vol. 17), Issue 01. Cover article." Scottyg says, "It worked on the 2nd try." dcarson says, " http://library.sciencemadness.org/library/books/ignition.pdf IGNITION! An Informal History of. Liquid Rocket Propellants by John D. Clark." Lunadyne says, "While the events of the republican campaigns in FL were unfortunate, it will hopefully awaken interest in Moonbases." lesausl says, "Interest? More like terminal ridicule. " Lunadyne says, "I'm trying to stay away from the idea of government-funded Moonbases. I just don't see it happening in this political climate." Lunadyne says, "But, there are strong cases to be made on the commercial side. That's our job." pjbanyai says, "I can open September's issue #248 in the Kindle app. It defaults to a very small scale which must be zoomed into. " lesausl says, "Moonbases can happen even in this political climate. It's Moon SETTLEMENT that cannot happen. . . " alanzaldua says, "Agreed. I think it best to hope for Virgin Galactic and Space X to eventually pull it off, starting with tourism and launching satellites to cis-lunar orbits. " kokhmmm says, "I think only an international base would work - Congress seems to respect our international commitments to ISS - that's why the International Lunar Research Park is getting so much attention and PISCES (Japan, Germany, Canada, Hawaii, NASA) are going to build phase I on the slopes of Mauna Kea" kokhmmm says, "But i too favor heavy commercial involvement with a corporation building the part of the complex in common and individual agencies plugging in." alanzaldua says, "Possible, but even international efforts can be very inefficient and costly, to wit: ISS." kokhmmm says, "Al I sent you the file almost finished so you can see if you can handle it." alanzaldua says, "OK, thanks. I'll check it out. " Lunadyne says, "Part of the job is showing the opportunities in cislunar space. Microgravity materials stuff. GEO Sat salvage. LEO debris removal. EML1 station for a number of things. &c." pjbanyai says, "A week ago or so the L.A Times had an article about the perils of a company leaders running for office. Newt is on the Board of Directors for NSS." PASSWORD [Guest] says, "On a more optimistic side we have the etenive history of international efforts in Antarctica which might be more analogous to international bases and operation on the Moon. We don't have anything yet that promises soemthing of high value like the quest for gold that drove American exploration." Lunadyne says, "With good reason. He's been a consistent space supporter." Lunadyne says, "Dave, necessity is the mother of invention. We need to deal with the GEO and debris situation sooner rather than later." Lunadyne says, "That work is best supported from the Moon." alanzaldua says, "Agreed." Lunadyne says, "I'm working on an article for The Space Review. " Lunadyne says, "Hopefully it can create some buzz on the topic." alanzaldua says, "I look forward to hearing about GEO sat salvage: how that would work. " lesausl says, "Me too. I see that as a prime industry for Lunar interests." Lunadyne says, "Stage from EML1." Lunadyne says, "dV to/from EML1/GEO is less than LEO to GEO." Lunadyne says, "DARPA jsut said they want to look at antennas from salvaged sats." Lunadyne says, "Salvaged sats are each a mini-LDEF, in the GEO environment for a known period of time. " kokhmmm says, "That makes the Moon the logical "partner" for GEO growth" Lunadyne says, "Fornesic analysis by engineers at EML1 can help us build better GEO sats and eventually platforms." kokhmmm says, "It is time, gentlemen" Lunadyne says, "Components can be re-used to create a network of Solar System probes that use the Inter-Planetary Superhighways to travel to different 'stations' and provide ongoing data streams instead of one-off data sets." lesausl says, "Ken, make absolutely, posditively certain you alert me when your article goes to print. i'm already excited about it!" alanzaldua says, "Now we are talking!!!!" pjbanyai says, "If I setup a Facebook Community Page for the International Lunar Research Park pointing to our official page and a causes progect page can someone write a good overview summary and background about our connection to it." pjbanyai says, "If I setup a Facebook Community Page for the International Lunar Research Park pointing to our official page and a causes project page can someone write a good overview summary and background about our connection to it." Lunadyne says, "Okay, I could go on all night. Good idea, Paul. I'll bet Peter cna help. Time to adjourn. In favor?" kokhmmm says, "I can try" Lunadyne says, "Or Dave." dcarson says, "aye" lesausl says, "Aye" Chard says, "aye" kokhmmm says, "aye" pjbanyai says, "aye" Lunadyne says, "Adjouned" alanzaldua says, "Aye." Scottyg says, "G'nite all!" Lunadyne says, "Adjourned" Chard says, "Goodnite" kokhmmm says, "(I see we are dong away with "second" LOL)" -- End log: Wednesday, February 1, 2012 11:02:19 pm ASI Meeting Server time --
