And yes, it's 2am here
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:17 PM
anyway - let's start
4/8/09 8:18 PM

a brief update on the Apollo Moon Party for new people
4/8/09 8:18 PM

the idea is to have a 'world celebration' for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:18 PM
 lets get started!
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:18 PM
so we organise as many events as possible around the world between July 16 and 24
4/8/09 8:19 PM

which may include: streetside telescope viewings, planetarium visits, videos, regular-type parties with beer, etc.
4/8/09 8:19 PM

other ideas are welcomed
David Dietzler
4/8/09 8:19 PM
we will have to think of something here at the MSSL
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:20 PM
Dave are you combining this with your monthly meeting tonight?
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:20 PM
Will there be a dedicated site or webpage for people to register their events and get ideas, perhaps even some pdfs they can print as handouts?
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:20 PM
we run it in parallel with an online Skype chat something like that, and maybe also streaming video from different locations, the idea being to keep the chat going around the world for at least a day
Keith Wetzel
4/8/09 8:20 PM
Our meeting is next wed
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:20 PM
we are in the process of making a page where you can register your parties, yes
Peter Kokh

Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:21 PM
What are some things we can do to help, in addition to getting the word out, of course>
David Dietzler
4/8/09 8:21 PM
we have switched to the 3rd Wed of the month for MSSL meetings so that we can make this online meeting
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:21 PM
Could be Mark, but not yet
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:21 PM
IYA connection would be good idea
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:21 PM
The IYA International Moon Week runs from July 20-26
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:21 PM
Dietz, got it
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:22 PM
Love the footprints!
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:22 PM
Is there a website for IYA Moon Week?
4/8/09 8:22 PM

Thanks, Tavi
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:22 PM
I have been trying to organize the manufacture of these monolith mementos but I've been really pressed for time lately
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:23 PM
Have you selected a material?
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:23 PM
only quote I've got so far is 3 GBP, not counting delivery to US
Keith Wetzel
4/8/09 8:23 PM
Well, I had the idea of on or near the anniversary date is sending letters to the editor of various newspapers, reminding about the Apollo anniversary and expressingwhat the potential of the Moon can mean for us
Tavi Anne Greiner
Edited 4/8/09 8:23 PM - tavianne
great idea
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:23 PM
Keith, it's a great idea but I would send them 2-4 weeks in advance to get them printed around that time
4/8/09 8:24 PM

maybe not necessary, I don't really know
Keith Wetzel
4/8/09 8:24 PM
okay
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:24 PM
All Im finding re: IYA moon week is the Spring Moon Watch
David Dietzler
4/8/09 8:24 PM
save some of those 4th of July fireworks for July 20, out in the country somewhere of course
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:24 PM
nice
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:24 PM

Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:24 PM
IYA may be able to get NASA Night Sky Network to send AMP into to all its registered astronomy clubs.
Keith Wetzel
4/8/09 8:24 PM
Give away Moon Pies?
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:25 PM
Don the 3GBP monoliths are black perspex
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:25 PM
That's actually a really good idea, Keith...
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:25 PM
Shaun:  is that a plastic
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:25 PM
That price seems doable.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:25 PM
yes
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:25 PM
Lots of Earth People loveLoveLOVE their moon pies
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:25 PM
If you want to have something in the papers, definitely send them detail *at least* 4 weeks in advance
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:25 PM
depending on shipment
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:25 PM
should we get them delivered to Milwaukee?
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:25 PM
More if you want a major feature
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:25 PM
That would be great, Mark - Are you directly connected with IYA?
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:25 PM
Shaun - the quote you got, did it specify delivery time?
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:25 PM
(you do the twitter, right?)
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:25 PM
they quoted me 210GBP delivery to CA, for 500 units
4/8/09 8:26 PM

lead time of 7-10 days, delivery 1-2 days
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:26 PM
I'm an IYA team member
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:26 PM
Shaun, what's the story on the monoliths?
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:26 PM
Not sure I want to be the transshipper, as that would be a strain on me financially
4/8/09 8:26 PM

Jerry, it is something I came up with
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:26 PM
the only quote I've got back to far is from clear touch in the UK
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:26 PM
It is a take off on the 2001 Space Odyssey monolith
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:27 PM
I love it
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:27 PM
an alternative, of course, is to ask the manufacturer to ship them individually, but they would charge a premium for that of course
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:27 PM
that's pretty spiffy, Peter
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:27 PM
and they may simply not want to do that
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:27 PM
I ask as I'm the Director of the Sir Arthur Clarke Awards, which were presneted last Saturday.  See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7986309.stm and www.clarkeawads.org
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:27 PM
Let's postpone that shipping discussion, pending a volunteer
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:28 PM
cool Jerry
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:28 PM
Our awards are glass monoliths (read the book!)
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:28 PM
Shaun:  Have you considering having the party sites/groups ordering them and distributing them?
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:28 PM
I'm also chair of my local astronomical society, which has the largest IYA programme in the UK
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:28 PM
OR perhaps PRE-Orders only?
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:28 PM
That might be the best distribution of risk
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:29 PM
yes, but presumably you would need to manufacture them as a single batch to reduce the price
4/8/09 8:29 PM

I do like the idea of pre-orders
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:29 PM
We could do one pre order and then if we had an unexpected demand, do a reorder
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:29 PM
True, but if we mixed the idea with pre-orders and worked to get "minimums" at each site it might be workable financially.
4/8/09 8:29 PM

Thats a good thought, Peter
4/8/09 8:30 PM

Are we limiting sales to before and during the party only?  What about follow on sales.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:30 PM
no, we will want to have them available all year I think, at least until we run out
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:30 PM
One idea I've toyed with i having balloons printed with the Moon's features.  Has anyone ever done this.  I though they'd be really good for star parties.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:30 PM
no need to restrict it
4/8/09 8:30 PM

and we might have stock to clear
4/8/09 8:31 PM

even 500 might be too many, it all depends how its marketed
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:31 PM
The baloon idea is cute. Is there anyone doing that?
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:31 PM
Would the monolith be a reasonable merchandise item that the Moon Society could offer on the natl and local sites?
4/8/09 8:31 PM

year-round
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:31 PM
for my part, I think they would be
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:31 PM
We could assess internal (local group members) demand and double that, should be safe enough
4/8/09 8:32 PM

Yes, Don, I should think so.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:32 PM
we should probably find a site that can sell them online for us
James Gholston added Rosalie Dieteman to this chat
4/8/09 8:32 PM
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:32 PM
hey Rosalie
Charles F. Radley
4/8/09 8:32 PM
hi all
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:32 PM
hey Charles
David Dietzler
4/8/09 8:33 PM
to bad we didn't make up a bunch of Apollo 40th T-shirts, if you are into advertising that way
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:33 PM
actually the T-shirts would be much easier to organise then the monoliths
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:33 PM
Patti can get the t-shirts made
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:33 PM
Hi Charles
Sergio Lebid
4/8/09 8:33 PM
Hi Charles
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:33 PM
we could do it through cafe press
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:33 PM
So what are we going to do about actual public activities?  Star parties are probably out for most of us, seeing as the sun sets around 11pm!
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:33 PM
It is a MOON party after all
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:33 PM
And the Moon is not out during this period.
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:33 PM
oh.
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:33 PM
Close to new Moon
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:34 PM
yeah but unfortunately its a crescent moon at this time
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:34 PM
Star Parties would work here in eastern US
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:34 PM
(waves)  hi Charles
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:34 PM
Last Quarter is July 15
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:34 PM
Apollo was a sun god, so maybe you could have a sun party
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:34 PM
I second that!
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:34 PM
lol lol lol
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:35 PM
That's just going to confuse people
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:35 PM
indeed
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:35 PM
Maybe
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:35 PM
Without the sun the Moon would be dark and cold all the time
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:35 PM
Works for me- I've certainly got the right logo in permanent ink
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:35 PM
If you tied in the SBSP angle - maybe not.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:35 PM
so would Earth, for that matter
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:35 PM
So how about public talks?
4/8/09 8:35 PM

In libraraies, etc, during the day?
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:35 PM
we will probably have one in Melb, as part of the VSA
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:36 PM
Public talks is something local groups and chapters could try to organize, but it is hard enough to get an opportunity, much less one in this specific time window.
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:36 PM
Can we tie IYA into our Moon Party?
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:36 PM
Could a 'standard' presentation - with the historical info - be put together for all of us to pull from?
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:37 PM
Peter - arent there several on the national site?
4/8/09 8:37 PM

I know we have some.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:37 PM
really I think its up to the people in each city how you choose to celebrate - some people will want public talks, others will just have a party, telescoping viewings, or a combination of things
Keith Wetzel
4/8/09 8:37 PM
Am I still connected?
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:37 PM
I can work with the Presentation
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:37 PM
Yes, but you have to make them your own to present them effectively
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:37 PM
Mark, what history were you referring to?
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:37 PM
a 20 minute powerpoint presentation that we could all use would be cool
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:38 PM
We can decide that this is a part of IYA celebrations.
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:38 PM
Great! I have been making Websites
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:38 PM
good idea Mark
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:38 PM
Apollo 11 specifics
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:38 PM
Pranav can do it... no problem....
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:38 PM
I can work on a PPT tailored for this event
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:38 PM
it would to nice to make a Graphical interactive ppt
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:39 PM
beyond my level of beginner expertise
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:39 PM
We would have to request that IYA add AMP to its list of activities
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:39 PM
Can anyone tell me a little more about the content
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:39 PM
That would be good, Mark
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:39 PM
How about Pranav does a first draft of a ppt presentation, then Peter can edit
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:39 PM
I have two talks about the Moon landings.  "How We Reached The Moon" tells precisely that, using contemporary images (over 150 of them!) and video.  The other is "Would You Believe - We Put A Man On The Moon" which looks at the claims of the "Moon Hooax" theorists - and tears them to shreds!
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:39 PM
Perhaps if Peter prepared a "Basic" version, then handed it of to say Pranav for "upgrade"?
Dennis Groves
4/8/09 8:39 PM
Does anyone have memorabilia they can use for this? A kind of show and tell? Models and stuff?
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:39 PM
I'm not volunteering Pranav for anything, mind you.... I'm just asserting his adeptness at most anything
David Dietzler
4/8/09 8:39 PM
there is a book called "Exploring the Moon" by David Harland with transripts of the Apollo missions that might provide some content for ppts, etc.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:39 PM
its ok he volunteered himself
Keith Wetzel
4/8/09 8:40 PM
Its awful quite in here, I'm I still in the chat?
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:40 PM

Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:40 PM
I am more comfortable talking about our future ont the Moon than about our past, so on second thoguth I might not be the best for this task.
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:40 PM
A ppt can be used as a template or guide that people can 'personalize' as needed
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:41 PM
All apollo expeditions I guess
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:41 PM
So, Pranav . . .
Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:41 PM
Peter, you are an odd duck.
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:41 PM

Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:41 PM
Yeah Hi Don!
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:41 PM
I'm available for presentations across Europe.  I could also do the US if finances could be arranged.  A nice lecture tour perhaps? (If this is Tuesday it must be Boston!)

Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:41 PM
aw allright!
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:42 PM

Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:42 PM
Just Apollo 11, I think
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:42 PM

4/8/09 8:42 PM

Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:42 PM
Jerry it would be good if you did a presentation in the UK somewhere
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:42 PM
Or the World View in a short Ppt
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 8:43 PM
Do we have an AMP twitter account?
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:43 PM

does anyone realize that there have been over 50 manned and unmanned missions to the Moon by the USA, ESA and Russia? Can't say we just landed in a few places and scooped up some sand
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:43 PM
Pranav, it's history, should not be purely US perspective
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:43 PM
yup!!!
4/8/09 8:43 PM

Hmmm!
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 8:44 PM

Annie O'Hara Bynum
4/8/09 8:44 PM
Russia started it all anyway with Sputnik
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:44 PM
But Pranav, of course it was the US who conducted the Apollo program, which is what we are commemorating, so of course it will be a story about Americans
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:45 PM
Rub it it why don't ya
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 8:45 PM
It would be fun to offer pdf charts that pointed out manned landing spots - for viewing during the moon parties
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 8:45 PM
Yeah i just downloaded the Apollo 11 entire info!
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 8:45 PM
yes but we aren't doing a history of space exploration, just about humans walking on the moon for the first time
Don Jacques
4/8/09 8:45 PM
We shared a moon landing image last mtg

Peter Kokh
4/8/09 8:47 PM
I  could do s presentation about all that we know now that was starring the Apollo 11 astronauts in the face but they did not yet realize it. That would include info on lunar materials and resources, things that would affect how settlers could adapt etc,
Dennis Groves

As it happens, I also have written a book about Apollo 11.  See http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/book/3916/One_Small_Step-Jerry_Stone.html  It's ostensibly the scrapbook of a young space enthusiast whose grandfather worked in Mission Control at the time.  It's very visual and has flaps to lift, etc.  Patrick Moore said it's "Marvellous"!

Unless things change, I will be hosting Astrocast.tv's "Our Night Sky" segment - it is an amateur astronomy outreach thing - I can feature the moon for the month of June or July and encourage people to get involved, include AMP site in a list of a few ways to participater

transcript for my own use - to ask participants to add me to their contacts list
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:01 PM
it's very hard to do web development this way
4/8/09 9:02 PM

so in other words, the AMP coincides with the IYA Moon Week
4/8/09 9:02 PM

makes sense really
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:02 PM
Shaun, I am thinking of something else for the events page - will write you later
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 9:02 PM
When is AMPs again? 16 - 24?

(Im looking up oiu)
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:04 PM
it was meant to be 'yes', I don't know why I thought to respond in French
4/8/09 9:04 PM

especially when I'm learning Spanish
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 9:04 PM
lol - I thought it was chat talk
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:04 PM
no, that would be far too obvious
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:04 PM
Shaun, for AMP events go to the party registration page, for other events by other organizations etc, see the list of links below - what do you think of that?
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 9:04 PM
It does stand for Orbiter Interface Unit (among other things)
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:05 PM
LMAO
Mark Tillotson
4/8/09 9:05 PM
So, do we have action items and follow up dates?
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:05 PM
Its the Aussie pronunciation for "Oh"
Shaun Moss added Patti Hultstrand to this chat
4/8/09 9:05 PM
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:06 PM
This looks like something that isn;t acutally happenning.  I put it on my AstroSoc calendar when it was originally announced, but now I can't find any mention of it.  There are the IYA Moon*Watch* weeks: Mar 28 - Apr 5 and Oct 24 - Nov 1.  Plus a Schools Moonwatch Week Nov 19-29
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 9:06 PM
Yes, we need to compile a tasks list, split everything up where we can
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:06 PM
That was in response to dates for the Moon Week
Don Jacques
4/8/09 9:06 PM

4/8/09 9:07 PM
what do you need from us?
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:07 PM
sounds good Don
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:08 PM
I could import the graphics, and give the link to Patti's page
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:08 PM
I like the caption "First shadow in space"
4/8/09 9:08 PM

because of course, shadows didn't exist in space before humans went to the Moon
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:08 PM
BTW, Bob - I think the easiest wasy to get a SKype transcript is to copy the text and paste in Word or similar
4/8/09 9:09 PM

Peter - you can advertise my book as well - I won't mind
Annie O'Hara Bynum

Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:27 PM
and I though you meant steam-powered rockets ...
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:27 PM
I am used to using the word Victorian with a connotation of mores of the period in history.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:27 PM
it gives us more credibility and administrative structure
4/8/09 9:28 PM

well, we do all carry parasols, of course
4/8/09 9:28 PM

and ride horses everywhere
Peter Kokh

Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:29 PM
Just make sure you don't knock your top hat off when you put your space helment on!
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:29 PM
which is probably meaningless to you guys, but its impressive for our first meeting
Tavi Anne Greiner
4/8/09 9:29 PM
I think its great!
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:29 PM
It is impressive
4/8/09 9:29 PM

(still laughing about the top hat though  )
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:29 PM
the other organizers are unexpectedly motivated and ambitious like me, so we are keen to work towards an Australian Space Agency
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:30 PM
That would be great
Don Jacques
4/8/09 9:30 PM
how about aussie NewSpace?
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:30 PM
I think we only have a dozen or so RSVPs so far, but we haven't really started promoting it yet
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:30 PM
Wish we had a British Space Agency <sigh>
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:30 PM

Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:31 PM

Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:31 PM
Do you want more? I could send on the 15th, broke until then
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:31 PM
I have been in the Mars Society for 10 years
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:31 PM
Why is that not surprising?
4/8/09 9:31 PM

OK.  I've been a Director in the UK for about 4 years.

Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:33 PM
When was that meeting?
Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:33 PM
Hardened moon settlers will make promising recruits for Mars compared to a lot of terran pansies.
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:33 PM

Peter Kokh
4/8/09 9:40 PM
what makes you suspect that, Shaun?
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 9:40 PM
Hahah
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:40 PM

Annie O'Hara Bynum

The daughter of Leto and Zeus, and the twin of Apollo. Artemis is the goddess of the wilderness, the hunt and wild animals, and fertility (she became a goddess of fertility and childbirth mainly in cities). She was often depicted with the crescent of the moon above her forehead and was sometimes identified with Selene (goddess of the moon). Artemis was one of the Olympians and a virgin goddess.
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:41 PM
her surname's still Westenberg, not Godsess
Pranav Mohla
4/8/09 9:41 PM
and change its name to EARTH 2
Shaun Moss
4/8/09 9:41 PM
lol
Jerry Stone
4/8/09 9:41 PM
